Un-American Companies, Or Just Un-American? You Decide

The reason the American economy is a mess and foreclosures are occurring is for one reason and one reason only, job losses. With no jobs we cannot earn to buy nor can we afford our house payments and this results in a sluggish economy and a high foreclosure rate. However, Big business does not see it this way, they want us to buy American but they sure aren’t committed to building American and here is my example of which I dare you to defy. Chrysler Chairman and CEO Bob Nardelli recently said that Chrysler prepared for a downturn in U.S. sales this year with layoffs and cuts in manufacturing and inventory. Chrysler President Tom LaSorda furthered the layoff issue by stating that the automaker is making good progress persuading its hourly workers to take buyouts despite the faltering economy, he went as far as to say that, “We’ve never missed a manpower reduction target.” Now isn’t that something to be proud of, they have never missed a target rate of termination, talk about something to hang your hat on.

Well thank you for adding to the unemployment numbers, reduced purchasers, and the potential foreclosure rate based on your now terminated workers in America. Additionally, GM and Ford are also offering buyouts to virtually all of their U.S. hourly workers. See these so-called American companies are cutting American workers faster than they can consider them but never are they asking for concessions overseas or in Latin America. Sales are down in the U.S. because jobs are down in the U.S. and jobs are down because companies like Ford and GM have lost the ability to be competitive and now they are grabbing at straws trying to find the cheapest labor as a way to stay competitive. However, cheap labor cannot buy their products and laid-off or bought out Americans cannot buy their products either so in the end they are cutting their own throats; the only problem is that you and me are caught up in the collateral damage and this is why the economy sucks.

 Ford CEO Alan Mulally stated, “We also stress-tested our business plan … to be able to go if everything gets much, much worse, to go down lower and still be able to keep implementing our plan…So we have the cash, we have the liquidity. We just need to absolutely stay on our plan now.” And what is that plan, is it the ‘For your eyes only way forward plan’? The For your eyes only way forward plan was a document never meant to see the light of day outside of Ford but by the soulful act of a true patriot did and now America can see just how un-committed Ford and companies like Fords is to real Americans. Just remember, today it’s the manufacturing jobs but tomorrow it will be yours, if you don’t think so neither did manufacturing unions 10 years ago, or computer specialists, or data entry workers.

See many American companies have forgone competitive advantages for the prospect of cheap labor but once everyone has cheap labor and they are on an even playing field then they will be behind because they have no other advantages. Chrysler recently announced it plans to cut 12,000 jobs, including 2,000 salaried jobs, how many of these fired or laid off will keep our economy chugging, how many foreclosures will this cause? Do you think Chrysler really cares?

Well for all of you out there struggling, take heart in this rich persons remark, “

Fords’ Mulally stated that the company’s restructuring efforts are ahead of plan, preparing it for trouble and that as hard as it is, as many people and facilities that it affected, it’s really going well. So next time you cannot feed your family because you are laid off, just remember that Mister Mulally is quite happy with how things are going, at least at his so-called American company anyways. And how about this gem of a closer on this topic, Jim Press of Chrysler stated that, “the one bright spot in the slow economy is that it affects all automakers equally.” What kind of statement is that? Is he really glad we are all doing so badly? Just what is going on here in America? What will our next President do, what will you do?
