Under the so called economy saver plan, every American taxpayer is supposed to get checks of several hundred dollars from the federal government as a way to stimulate the economy. However, the rain on this parade is that the federal deficit will increase by the same amount as the aid which will result in about a $150 billion dollar increase in our federal deficit which still worsens the outlook of America. Additionally, if this stimulus money is spent on imports and not domestically made products then all we really accomplished was a short term pop that has a long term consequence. Why doesn’t a standing Congressman or Senator or even a 2008 Presidential candidate just say it, ‘We need jobs not purchases.’ What good does it do to stimulate the American economy if all we do is buy imported goods from companies that send the money back overseas to their countries of origin? Come on Washington, you do not think we are that stupid do you? Or are our politicians just that bought by big business lobbyists? We need domestic job creation not $700 dollar purchases. We need job creation which will last more than a 6 month temp placement at a low paying job; we need real jobs with real futures.
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is the Bush administration’s lead man for the economic stimulus plan and he should know that the American workers need the help and the domestic American businesses, not businesses who produce in foreign lands or who sell only imported goods. Congressional leaders of both parties are talking to their membership to sell the plan but that’s because they are trying to save the lobbyists payouts while also assuring themselves a re-election come Election Day 2008. Don’t condescend to me, I know that the problem is not going to be permanently solved by a temporary shot in the arm, I know we need more. I also know that the subprime loan is not the cause of all the problems, the problem is that homeowners are losing their jobs at alarming rates and then losing their homes. Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department are stating that Congressional and White House negotiators want to finalize the agreement to provide checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple who paid income tax and who filed jointly. Additionally, People who did not pay federal income taxes but did earn an income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple. There may also be an additional amount per child depending on the finalized plan. Above any of this we must have domestic business incentives.
What good does it do me to take $700 and do the following:
Buy a suit- $200 back to Indias’ economy.
Buy a television - $400 back to China.
Buy a CD Player - $40 back to Taiwan.
Buy a New Hat - $40 back to Mexico.
Buy some Tennis Shoes - $20 back to Vietnam.
Where is the benefit for Americans?
Create a job, which is how we will benefit otherwise the money just goes to foreign countries and the problem will emerge once again.
But hey, we have a Mayor in Detroit who was elected by voters and look what he has done. If a mayor like Kwame Kilpatrick can do what the Free Press has said he has done and Christine Beatty can do what she has done, all on the taxpayers dollars, and then they get re-elected to office, well maybe we can now see why American prosperity has been sent overseas and we are in the trouble we are. Detroit was once the manufacturing capitol of the world and now look at the mess it is in. Maybe we must look at ourselves as well as our economy. Are Detroiters taking the blame for re-electing Mayor Kilpatrick? He is now facing perjury but many in Detroit have seen this coming and yet they still voted him in to office. The rumored parties, the Navigator, the Trysts, the rumored affairs, and the notorious security details are all just the tip of this mans’ iceberg and yet Detroiters voted him back into office. We need to look hard at who we elect, not just in Detroit but in the whole United States, we need much better politicians protecting our economy going forward and hopefully the 2008 candidates provide this.
