Free Trade with China has provided us with Lead Toys, Tainted Poultry, Seafood, Hazardous Baby Bibs, Unemployment, and now they have brought their taste for Global Pollution to us. United States authorities are currently detaining the all-Chinese crew of the Cosco Busan, which is the containership that spilled some 58,000 gal of heavy bunker oil into the San Francisco Bay after it rammed a section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Just how much will we take from China before someone addresses their open disregard for safety and humanity? The Ice Age may have wiped out dinosaurs but Chinese and Indian globalization may totally destroy the world. China this year has overtaken the United States as the world’s biggest producer of carbon dioxide, which is considered to be the chief greenhouse gas causing global warming and what are they planning on doing about this in China? Nothing, that’s right, nothing. There have recently been international negotiations to produce a new climate treaty to succeed the Kyoto protocol when it expires in 2012 but China and India are strongly opposed to any new protocols. The US refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol because it made no demands on China to curb its emissions. The new negotiations are designed to find a way to include the United States and China, as well as other developing economies such as India and Brazil. Just how much can the world absorb of our waste products and pollution? Before we try industrializing the world maybe we need to get a grip on how much the world can handle. It does no country any good if we all globalize and die of the results. We also need to make sure that countries like India and China are responsible global citizens before we continue trade with them. Right now India and China allow slave labor, Child labor, and dangerous pollution emissions because no one steps up to stop them. It’s time we slow trade with these two global destroyers until they shape up their act and get on board with global responsibility. How many lead toys can we play with or how many pil spills can we soak up before we start to suffer?
Imagine if an American or Canadian tanker leaked oil in Asia, it would be all over the news media throughout the world. However, because it’s China everyone looks the other way and says, ooh it’s just China again. Well that attitude will not fly and it shouldn’t. US authorities have detained the all-Chinese crew of the Cosco Busan, and this Chinese company who owns the ship should be held liable for the cost of the clean-up, or as much as we can hit them up for. The Cosco Busan’s entire crew is being detained aboard the ship for questioning but we want answers and action, not just questions. The crew’s detention came after the US attorney’s office was notified about issues involving management and communication involving the ship and its navigation. However, as China becomes an economic power throughout the world this type of event will occur more and more frequently. Just look at China’s own domestic problems and you will see. There is the cancer village, the SAR’s outbreak, the Bird Flu issues, and all of the poisoned waterways and rivers, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s time we not only stood up to China in America but its time the whole world held them accountable. And after China we need to address India.
