Just Who Is Our American Government Working For?

Let me see if I understand this correctly, and please correct me if I am wrong, President Bush vetoed legislation that was to expand a children’s health insurance program by $35 billion over five years because the plan was fiscally irresponsible? Does anyone recall it was a Bush cabinet member who said the War in Iraq could be won for $ 40 Billion? Reportedly President Bush was quoted as saying, “I believe in private medicine, not the federal government running the health care system. I do want Republicans and Democrats to come together to support a bill that focuses on the poorer children.” No, far be it from a far leaning republican to care about a poor child, instead let’s focus on tax breaks and the War in Iraq. If either side of the Congress or Senate are using this as just a political maneuver then it is politics at its worst. President Bush says he vetoed the SCHIP bill because it was a step towards federalizing health insurance but many say he is wrong, totally wrong. Democrats and many Republicans took to the floors of the Senate and House of Representatives to criticize the veto by the President. Numerous Democrats explained that the bill received great bipartisan support and the President totally thumbed his nose at the needs of the people and the wants of his own Republican party. One must ask, why is it so important to give to all others in the world and deprive domestic Americans so much. Why do we give to Africa and Asia to feed and educate the poor when we neglect our own so severely? Why is it more important to give fledgling businesses in Iraq American dollars than it is to give poor children health care? Where have our priorities gone? What have we become?

Senator Edward Kennedy was quoted as saying, “I think that this is probably the most inexplicable veto in the history of the country. It is incomprehensible. It is intolerable. It’s unacceptable.” Do you agree with the Senator from Massachusetts? Is anyone really doing anything for the American public any longer or are the politicians in Washington really just focusing on the interests of lobbyists and big business? Congressional Democrats demanded swift action by the White House in regards to the sub prime mortgage crisis. Many Democrats were heard mumbling that President Bush has been unhurried to address a state of affairs that could cost millions American citizens their homes. What 2008 Presidential candidate can change this? Who will once again be a champion of the American people?
