Has anyone noticed that when Iraq won the Asian soccer championship there were hundreds of Iraqi’s in various cities flying their Iraqi flags and citing their Iraqi allegiance while celebrating in the streets on the United States. A similar situation was displayed by Mexican Americans on Cinco De Mayo. These two unique cultural instances beg the question, ‘Where is the American allegiance?’ These unique cultures were not flying American flags on Independence Day or Labor Day or even on Memorial Day, are they not aligned with the country they are citizens in? How can these unique cultures celebrate the heritage of a country where they have never been to while neglecting the country they are actually a citizen of? Has America and its Governmental policies started to cost America a painful price? Have we as Americans stopped becoming the Great Melting Pot and instead become a set of steak knives with all different looks and feels and no allegiance to the overall good of the set which is in reality the country better known as the United States of America? What will our next President elected in 2008 do to make all foreigners Americans first and foremost? Have we curtailed to the foreigner more than should have been in doing so lost a lot of Americanism? Most Americans have no problem with foreigners celebrating their heritage because other than American Indians we are all only two to three generations removed from immigrants ourselves. However, its the new immigrants who do not show any allegiance to the United States which is of great concern.
Has outsourcing and a much to fast and overwhelming illegal immigration policy cost America its identity and potentially its greatness? Will America become fragmented much like the Soviet Union of the 90’s or modern day Iraq? If America is to continue to be the melting pot then how can it tolerate Mexican neighborhoods, Arab neighborhoods, and Asian neighborhoods? If we continue to only live among our own then we will become isolated and close minded and eventually racist and distrustful, much like we are seeing happening in Islamic countries in the Middle East.
Many say that outsourcing has shown that Americans have adopted a greater individual over the greater good of the country attitude and therefore the all for one ideal is dead. Is this right? Have we lost the American Dream? If we have lost the dream, is there a way to get it back? Have we become a nation of ‘look out for ourselves’ people?
Maybe the ‘Buy American’ or ‘Made in America’ policies have not caught on recently because we do not have enough American citizens with American allegiance living in the United States. Maybe our own Government has worried so much about countries abroad they have forgotten to cultivate Americana back here at home.
Lets hope the next President elected in 2008 has a stronger allegiance to making all of the citizens of the United States Americans, this will help us all be safe, secure, profitable, and successful. United We Stand, Divided We Fall.
