While we toil away in Iraq and Afghanistan we are wasting away domestically in the United States. The steam-pipe explosion in New York City is just another reminder of how America is wasting billions abroad while not keeping up with the times domestically. Just like we have forgotten the lessons learned from 9/11 we have not really addressed the underlying issues from the rolling power blackouts of just a few years ago. Why does the American Government do so little to restore American infrastructure yet it bends over backwards to help out third world countries? New York has steam pipes under its streets and sidewalks which were laid over a century ago. We also have failing roads, again city and light power systems, and a severe lack of high speed internet access equipment. How can America be considered a super power when it is crumbling from the inside out? Have we become the fat emperor who is destined for defeat? Which political party will actually reinvest back in America domestically so that America is prepared for the next century of business and prosperity?
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the explosion in New York but most experts agree it is the age of the city’s infrastructure that is most likely the main factor. All across America a number of cities are reaching a period of maintenance where the infrastructure the city relies on is showing signs of stress and strain. Half of the major cities in the Midwest are going broke or suffering budget crisis because of the loss of job based tax funds. How will these cities afford the upkeep and rebuilding of their infrastructures? If America does not invest in itself then who will?
Throughout tens of major cities the miles and miles of underground water and sewage pipes are nearing the end of their projected life cycle. Our electrical systems are in similar forms of disrepair with many systems operating with components that are decades old and unable to meet maximum power demands.
We need reinvestment in Americas’ roads, bridges, dams, electrical systems, Levees, and water treatment systems. Americans used to laugh at third world countries and now America is almost becoming a third world type country. When will American politicians look at themselves and their country instead of across thousands of miles of ocean and seas? The only way to stay competitive and keep jobs in America is to keep America prepared and technologically ready. Let’s hope the 2008 Presidential Candidates address this need and the 2008 President Elect gets the job done.
