Halliburton Sells Out America For Oilier Pastures Abroad

The state of Michigan and in particular the city of Detroit jumped all over Comerica Bank when they advised they were moving their headquarters from Detroit Michigan to Dallas Texas. There was so much outrage many citizens wanted the Detroit Tigers to rename their baseball park even though the Tigers had a sponsorship contract signed with Comerica. Michiganians were in an uproar and took every opportunity to bash Comerica but these same idiots are speechless when it comes to Halliburton who is not only moving jobs but they are moving the majority of their corporation overseas to the Middle East. Comerica kept the jobs in America while Halliburton is moving the jobs half way around the world. Where is the outrage at this? Many also want to know why Halliburton received so many non-compete contracts from the United States Government when it had to be known that the company was considering this move. You do not decide to move an American business to the Middle East in a matter of weeks or even months; this had to be a long thought out maneuver. So where does this leave America? What does it say about the business climate in America and the business policies America has in place?

The report that U.S. oil services firm Halliburton is moving its headquarters and chief executive to Dubai shocked Washington but in reality most in the know in Washington had to have had some idea, a move like this is not something that occurs out of the blue. American politicians were quick to go on the offensive in regards to the move and criticism from U.S. politicians ensued. However, sticks and stones won’t hurt Halliburton bones and names will never cost them. The only way to deal with this type of behavior is to limit their ability to do business for American taxpayers. Their status as a company who cut American jobs for overseas labor must be documented and they should not receive favorite status as they have.

The Texas based Halliburton Corporation was once led by Vice President Dick Cheney and many say Cheney had sway in delivering many large non-compete contracts to Halliburton, is this how Halliburton repays the United States? Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Patrick Leahy stated, “This is an insult to the U.S. soldiers and taxpayers who paid the tab for their no-bid contracts and endured their overcharges for all these years.”

Halliburton stated that it would maintain its legal registration in the United States and was not totally leaving the Houston area. However, leadership at Halliburton stated, “At this point in time we clearly see there are greater opportunities in the eastern hemisphere than the western hemisphere.”

I sure hope this is not the economic policy President Bush has been pushing recently; I would hope he encourages domestic job creation and not more outsourcing. The Republicans need to be aware, the citizens of the United States are watching this and they will remember it during the next election.
