I was taught as a child that the boy whop called wolf will find himself alone when he needs the rest of the world the most and now that we cried wolf with Iraq we are left standing in the cold in relation to Iran. We may have been wrong about Iraq but it appears we are dead on with Iran and its subversive behavior. However, the problem is that we have ruined our credibility and now it is hard for other counties to trust us when we were so wrong about Iraq. Basically we will have to catch Iran with the smoking gun in their hand if we want to go after them on this one. Reportedly American and Iraqi intelligence has found serial numbers and markings on explosives used in Iraq which provides solid evidence that Iran is providing either weapons or technology for militants in Iraq. However, America must now deal with the boy who cried wolf image it has created and maybe, just maybe, an important lesson will be learned through all this while at the same time the world addresses Iran in an appropriate fashion.
Reportedly American and Iraqi officials will soon be offering some of the first public information providing evidence the military has collected that shows Iran is providing weapons and training in Iraq. Secretary Robert Gates stated, “I think there’s some serial numbers, there may be some markings on some of the projectile fragments that we found that point to Iran.” Secretary Gates also stated that recent maneuvers in Iraq have resulted in the capture of Iranians in Iraq involved in hostile action towards Iraqi and American security forces.
Iran has asked for its population to stand together against the world in defiance to the worlds concerns over Irans’ nuclear ambitions. However, many inside Iran say that the vast population in Iran is in vast disagreement with the current Islamic leadership in Iran and the population would much rather see an embracement of the United States and Western diplomatic entities. Furthermore, it has been reported that there are growing revolution groups in Iran actually publicly demonstrating against the Iranian president and his ideals. Previously this type of revolt was unheard of but many say that the vast population of Iran wants much more liberalism and moderation than the government lets on.
Will Iran be attacked? We will soon find out. However, we must use the Iran issue to asses our mistakes on the Iraq issue. We must remember that we cannot be so wrong in a situation where we must be very right. We cannot make the mistakes we made about Iraq ever again. If America is to be respected as credible then we must only rely on credible resources. We must avoid retaliation based on gut feelings and idealism. We must stick to the facts and hold ourselves to a high level of standards. (0% of America wanted to finish Saddam off because of what he started in the 1990’s but in the end our satisfaction was short lived and our problems increased tenfold.
On Iran we need the right type of leadership and the most profound intelligence. We have to do this and we have to do this right. Whether its diplomacy or war, we must make sure we address Iran in the appropriate fashion.
