Are We Growing A Generation Of Failures? Who Is To Blame?

President Bush signed the ‘no child left behind’ proclamation but the parents of the ‘no child left behind’ era are failing at raising their children much more than President Bush and his administration are failing a policy. American kids listen to I-Pods all day, Taiwanese children learn how to build them. American children play video games with the majority of their free time; Chinese children are learning how to program the games. American children spend all day on their ‘my space’ sites working from their personal computers, Indian children are learning how to program and service the actual computer. The Vietnamese make our clothes and the Mexicans supposedly do the manual jobs American children won’t grow up to take. So ask yourself, ‘what type of future are we preparing our children for?’ When everything is done for them what is left for them to do? Are we just being fattened up for the kill?

This may be the generation of excess but the children of the future will be the generation of the unemployed and out of work if we do not improve their study habits and their use of free time. America made strides in previous generations by turning past times into skilled trades but somehow I don’t think the next generation will need professional I-Pod listeners or video game players. Go to any hospital and ask yourself what is the percentage of India doctors to American ones, now look at your self and tell me we as a country are doing good for our children.

If the adults of America do not change their ways they will leave a legacy of failure and misery for their children and their grandchildren. The majority of developing countries are encouraging college education and trade skills while in America we are experiencing a rising high school drop out rate. If this trend keeps up America will soon become the third world country so many children now laugh at on their cable television. China, India, and numerous European countries are enacting very direct educational policies to assure their populations future but in America the prevailing attitude is that college is not for everyone.

College is not for everyone may have gotten by in previous decades but if we skirt education for fun and activity we will suffer the consequences. I am not saying children should not have fun; activities are a great part of development. However, education needs to become much more of a focus in America than it currently is and the motivating factor has to be the parents of American children.

It is amazing that millions will search out the Saddam Hussein death video but very rarely will they search out virtual museums, national geographic videos, or even a normal news site. It amazes me that we know soo much about Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton yet those same people most likely cannot do algebra or name the capitol of the states bordering their own state.

This sad fact displays how our priorities are out of whack. It’s good to have some fun but we also need to make sure we do what has to be done to assure our future prosperity otherwise we will fail our children and their children’s children. It’s in your hands, do something today and make a change.
