Here come the Democrats and there goes President Bush, will they ever see eye to eye? Who knows? One thing that won’t change, President Bush will do whatever he feels necessary to try and protect America; at least in his opinion ands the Democrats in power in Washington will do the same. Case in point is the new postal reform act. Wireless phone taps were one thing but did you know that now your mail is open game as well?
A report out of Washington states that President Bush has previously signed legislation which allows the Government to open mail and investigate it without a warrant in timely circumstances. The White House denies any change in policy but would you expect any less? Normal law requires the United States Government to get warrants to open first-class letters. However, the postal reform act signed by President Bush had an added statement stating that the Government can open your mail in a manner consistent with investigative actions to the maximum extent permissible based on the need to conduct searches in exigent circumstances. Many Democrats want to balance security with the right to privacy and this will be a very real first test for them. For the newly elected Democrats entering Washington there are numerous issues ready to be addressed and the old Democrats will waste no time getting on the issues.
The first few issues that will be addressed by the Democrats are the issues regarding Iraq, Immigration, Stem-Cell research, and Outsourcing Job Losses. Another major issue is tax reform and tax cuts. These are just a few of the issues that will smack the new Democratic led Congress right in the face but they are considered important ones by the American public who elected these Democrats to majority. The House of Representatives is not alone, the newly Democratic Senate will also face many challenges and reforms.
The Democrats say their newly formulated legislation bills will work towards implementing the unfinished 9/11 Commission recommendations that fall under the Homeland Security Committee’s jurisdiction. The Democrats say these measures will be focused on and implemented immediately. The new Democratic plan will require private companies to prepare for terrorism. The legislation also addresses the Governments’ responsibility to ensure that cargo on passenger planes and shipping containers leaving the largest ports are thoroughly inspected. Their legislation will also provide airport screeners with whistle-blower protection so that they can make honest statements in regards to the true picture of airport safety and security. The Democrats also want money for explosive detection technology.
What do you expect from the newly Democratic majority Government? Many want job security, domestic job creation, and fair trade with China. Will we hold their feet to the flame? Only time will tell but lets hope this new Government focuses on domestic America much more than the previous group did.
