Happy New Years for most but for over 3000 American parents it was not so happy. In baseball 3000 hits gets you into the Hall of Fame and for the growing War detractors of the Bush Administration 3000 deaths reinforces their rhetoric that President Bush deserves to be in the Hall of Shame. We have passed the 3000 death mark in Iraq and what do we have to show for the loss of life? We have an executed Saddam Hussein but in reality that meets Irans’ goals much more than it does Americas’. 3000 deaths are not like Wade Boggs’ 3000 hits, it’s a milestone that should be reviled not reveled. These brave men and woman are souls which will never enjoy another New Years with their families again and for what? Apparently for the spread of democracy but I get the feeling Iraq is merely going from a singular dictator to a secular dictatorship and the madman Iranian President may be the puppet master pulling the Iraqi strings. If Americans are going to die it has to be for a more just cause than what is now the mission in Iraq. It’s time Americans put much more pressure on the President and Congress to either get this war ended or just bring our boys and girls home, one more loss is unacceptable and to think we could lose thousands more should be intolerable to all of us.
We must remember that these deaths are lives not numbers or milestones. Each one of these soldiers had dreams, hopes, and desires for the future. However, in an instant in a hostile country their future was taken from them. We cannot dismiss this so easily. If it was your brother or sister who was the 3000 soldier killed on New Years day how would you feel? I am sure this soldier had a mother and a father and numerous friends, how do you think they enjoyed the holiday? What about the parents of all the others? Happy New Years, I think not. Now consider the tens of thousands of American soldiers with head injuries, blown off arms and legs, how happy do you think they were to celebrate the passing of 2006? We should remember these brave sacrifices and honor their courage and bravery. However, we must make sure that their task is equal to their sacrifice. The American Government must make sure the policy in Iraq is at a standard which equals the sacrifice of our brave boys and girls fighting in Iraq. There needs to be a much better reason for our sons and daughters to be in harms way than we currently have in Iraq. We don’t want our sons and daughters dieing for the Muqtadr al-Sadrs of the Middle East.
I, as well as many of you, look forward to the excitement, expectation, investigation, and awe that 2007 will bring us. However, we must remember that we need to be vigilant and hold our Government accountable for our countries actions. We need to make sure we do not lose loved ones in vain. The war in Iraq is taking our children and our resources and many say that in reality it is a pointless war being fought the wrong way. Most of us are not war professionals or military masterminds; we rely on those in charge to provide the strategy and policy that will lead us to victory. However, many of the armchair military quarterbacks are beginning to question the American policy in Iraq and the number of questioners is growing and growing, can so many be so wrong? Maybe we do need to take a closer look at our Governments actions and its policies; maybe we do need to demand more accountability.
3000 deaths is a horrendous milestone, I hope it is the last awful milestone we attain in Iraq.
