The execution of Saddam Hussein will do nothing more than add fuel to the Shiite fire which is stoking ethnic and religious violence in Iraq. Iran wants nothing more than to have more chaos brought about by seeing their most hated villain hung while at the same time gaining a stronger foothold in Iraq because of the chaos that will ensue once it is accepted that Saddam has been executed. Love him or hate him it is likely Saddam will be executed very soon. He will receive his last meal, be walked to the execution stage, have a noose placed around his neck, then with a quick lever pull he will be executed.
However, when he dies will the Iraqi insurgency go away? Most likely not. A few shallow individuals will gain some form of enjoyment from the execution of Saddam but for most it will be a non-event. Saddam is a terrible criminal and deserves just punishment but in regards to the Iraqi situation his death will do nothing more than give the racist insurgency a reason to commit more heinous crimes. The vast majority of retaliation will not be for Saddam’s execution as much as it will be for their resentment of losing the power and prestige Saddam represented for them. The dead-enders will loot and kill and say it is in the name of Saddam but in reality Saddam is just an excuse for how they feel betrayed by their own current situation. And don’t forget, Iran is stoking their hatred whether they know it or not.
We are supporting an Iraqi government who is actually supporting Iranian insurgents operating in Iraq. Shiite clerics rule Iran and they want their tentacles to reach deep into the heart of Iraq and as far as anyone can tell they are getting their wish. As we rack our heads and waste our resources trying to resolve the Iraqi issue we are finding out more and more that the Iraqi government we are trying to prop up is actually nothing more than a willing lap dog for the Shiia politicians back in Iran.
President Bush is in deeper than he knows and I think its time we get a 180 degree change of strategy in place because the one we have now is making us nothing more than a laughing stock in the Middle East. Numerous Arab countries say that Iranian influence can be seen by the Iraqi’s inability to control Muqtadr al-Sadr as well as the Shiite death squads provoking Sunni regions into committing violent acts.
The Saudi’s are well aware of the problem and so are the Jordanians but for some reason the Bush Administration does not grasp the concept that Syria and Iran are playing us like fools in Iraq. President Bush can be called a lot of things but you should never doubt his loyalty to America. He is actually believing he is doing that which is right and needed to secure Americas’ future and for all we know he is correct. However, he needs to come to terms with the current situation and formulate a new strategy that sidelines the Iranian influence in Iraq. Until we do this we will still be the Court Jester of the Middle East no matter what we may think.
Recently American soldiers detained a few Iranians who were captured in a raid on a known insurgency safe house. The Iranians were said to have been in Iraq on the invitation of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani. Once word got out that the Iranians were detained the Iraqi government moved swiftly to pressure Americans to turn them over to Iran. The detained were reportedly handed over to Iranian officials in the presence of Iraq’s National Security Adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie.
Hassan Kazemi Qomi, who is Iran’s ambassador to Baghdad, stated, “Fortunately with the effort exerted by the Iraqi officials, the U.S. forces, who first denied their arrest, were obliged to admit it and under pressure from the Iraqi government to release them.”
The White House earlier this week released a statement advising that U.S. troops apprehended at least two Iranians and released two others who had diplomatic immunity. The White House spokesman advised that the Iranians were taken into custody during a routine raid on suspected insurgents. The plot thickened when it was reported by Maryam Rajavi, the head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran that the two Iranians detained by U.S. forces in Iraq were actually current senior members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards. Maryam stated that it is known that the two Iranians have coordinated attacks against coalition troops and Iraqi civilians. Iraq, and Iran disoute Maryams’ statements.
The United States has repeatedly accused Iran of supplying money, weapons components and training to Shiite militia in Iraq. Iran has always denied these allegations. The links are there and the problem continues. If we do not properly address the Iranian and Syrian influence in Iraq we will never have the stability we desire for this country.
I think I would have preferred Sadaam not to die. Not that I would take up for a person of his character, but I think his word’s may have been enough to help turn Iraq around. I would have used Sadaam influences to speak to the insurgents advising them to give up the fight. I just see more use in him being alive then dead.
