Reportedly Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to hang from the gallows and his last attempt at subverting the punishment handed down to him has been addressed and removed as an obstacle to bringing about his final punishment for his crimes against humanity. Ironically, the disposed president of Iraq has written a good-bye letter to the followers of his long time leadership and he spent little time spouting his true feelings of hate and disgust for the current Iraqi government as well as the American led effort in Iraq. Saddam states in the letter that he does not directly hate American soldiers; he more or less stated he hates the American policy the soldiers support. Saddam Hussein made it a point to call on Iraqis not to hate the U.S.-led forces that invaded Iraq in 2003. Sadaam stated, “I call on you not to hate because hate does not leave space for a person to be fair and it makes you blind and closes all doors of thinking” Many say the statement just shows how schizophrenic this leader is while others say it shows that Saddam is a true man of compassion. Regardless of how you feel about Sadaam he will most likely be removed from this earthly world very soon.
Saddams’ letter became public after the Iraqi appeals court upheld the Sadaams’ death sentence and ordered him to be hanged within the next 30 days. The letter has been authenticated and one of Saddams’ lawyers confirmed the letter posted on a Baath Party website is authentic.
According to reports coming out of the Middle East, the former Iraqi president stated he was writing the good-bye letter because his lawyers advised him that the Iraqi High Tribunal would give him an opportunity to say a final public statement but Sadaam advised the opportunity never arose. Saddam advised in his letter that, “That court and its chief judge did not give us the chance to say a word, and issued its verdict without explanation and read out the sentence dictated by the invaders without presenting the evidence.”
The letter began like a Dear John letter by stating, “Dear faithful people, I say goodbye to you, but I will be with the merciful God who helps those who take refuge in him and who will never disappoint any honest believer.”
Reportedly Baathist loyalists are threatening to retaliate if the ousted Iraqi president is executed by stating on the same site as the good-bye letter that the Baathists will target U.S. interests anywhere once Sadaam is executed. They went on to say that, “The Baath and the resistance are determined to retaliate, with all means and everywhere, to harm America and its interests if it commits this crime.”
Some say killing Saddam will only make Iraq more tumultuous while others say it will help the country close a sad chapter of its history and allow Iraq to actually begin to move in a new direction.
I don’t care for Sadaam Hussein’s actions (an understatement). A cemetery only about three miles from me as the crow flies holds the earthly remains of Brian Simpson, one of the last victims of one of Sadaam’s SCUD missiles launched during Operation Desert Storm. I also believe that he DID have WMDs in his country and that they were simply well-concealed. Therefore, I’m glad that he was taken out of power. However, I oppose the death penalty at all times–and I especially oppose the death penalty in this case where the lust to “get even” might very well result in terrorism like we haven’t yet seen. I think that, instead, Sadaam should be locked up and sentenced to read the books of Mattie Stepanek in hopes that this precious angel can teach him something!
