Donald Rumsfeld Lays His Cards Down And Calls It Quits

The Democratic gains in the 2006 elections may have dealt a bad hand to President Bush and when push came to shove it appears Rummy was called and the wild card of the Bush Administration folded. The hardened Secretary of Defense was facing a Full house and he believes it was just not in the cards any longer for him to stay in his position with the Bush Administration. The next few months will be interesting times and it will be an exciting time at the White House. The Bush Administration now has its excuse to change the course of this failed policy, will they grab it? Only time will tell. However, if there is one thing the new Democrats promised it is that their form of government will focus more on domestic America and less on the non-American issues currently dominating our political process. Regardless of whether you are a Democrat or a Republican it will be nice to have our government focusing on American issues and not bandying about tying to save the world.

The Democrats have won major gains in the 2006 elections, how will this effect the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? We have heard so many slogans and milestones in the past 4 years but we have in reality seen no real improvement in Iraq. We went in thinking we would be greeted as liberators, thousands of car bombs later we are still awaiting our first real ‘Thank You.’ Next we were told that the removal and capture of Sadaam Hussein would end all the problems we began noticing in Iraq, we caught Sadaam and imprisoned him and thousands of drive-by shootings later we still have the same problems in Iraq we had at the beginning. The next obstacle we were told we had to overcome was the capture of the Jordanian terrorist leading the insurgency in Iraq, we caught this booger and hundreds of kidnappings later we are still facing insurgency problems. We were told the purple finger people of Iraq would rush in a new era of moderation and acceptance into Iraq. Thousands of sectarian murders later we still have a country on the brink of all out civil war.

Let’s see, we were also told the capture of Sadaams’ two sons would help end the Iraqi insurgency problems, this did not materialize as we were led to believe. We were told the reconstruction efforts in Iraq would make a change. Tens of deaths later Bechtel has pulled the rest of their living employees out of Iraq and with all of their building efforts Iraq is still a nightmare. The new government in Iraq appears more interested in kissing the ass of Muqtadr al-Sadr than they do running their own country. We have squashed insurgencies, we have captured and killed wanted trouble causers, we have supplied money and lives, what more can we give? Every stated need by our leadership in Iraq has been met since the war began and still we see no real tangible progress.

One can only hope that a fresh new look in Washington will result in a fresh new policy in Iraq. I was disgusted to see a proposal on my election ballot asking me to give more in taxes to fund education when in reality the money should have been there. This proposal just reminds me of how much we are wasting in a country that really does not appreciate it all the while we are taking away fro mthe future of our own children here in America.
