Is Senator John McCain A Sell Out To America?

In a recent Time article on CNN’s site it was reported that Senator John McCain has recently broken ranks once again with the Bush, and Republican, party line which states that the war in Iraq, as well as the war on terror, is going to plan and that all is well that will end well. The article stated, “So what was the Arizona senator and top-shelf 2008 presidential contender up to yesterday in Ohio when he unloaded on the Bush Administration’s handling of the war in a speech that, with a few tweaks, could have been delivered by an anti-war Democrat?

“I think one of the biggest mistakes we made was underestimating the size of the task and the sacrifices that would be required,” McCain said. “Stuff happens, mission accomplished, last throes, a few dead-enders,” he went on, citing some of the, ah, less-than-accurate assessments of the Iraq venture made over the years by the President, Vice President and secretary of defense.

That kind of overly optimistic talk, McCain said, “has contributed enormously to the frustration that Americans feel today because they were led to believe this could be some kind of day at the beach, which many of us fully understood from the beginning would be a very, very difficult undertaking.”” Senator McCain was a presidential candidate previously and during his campaign he spoke out numerous times in regards to differences with President Bush’s proposed policies and ideals. However, soon after the election Senator McCain joined back in and eased back into the Republican Party and its confines.

So this begs the question, has Senator McCain been towing the party line at our expense? Did he actually sell out for the better of his party? If so, can he really be considered a top line presidential candidate? We need a leader who will lead us, not one who will conform to part politics. We need what John McCain was, not what he has become. I respect the Senator for his accomplishments in Washington but I really have a problem with his subservient behavior to the Bush policies in regards to the war on terror.

Many believe the recent rhetoric is a pandering to the recent polls which show a growing concern and divide with the decisions involving the war in Iraq and the war on terror. McCain has been speaking at campaign events for fellow Senators; he is trying to build support for Republicans facing stiff anti-Bush, anti-GOP, anti-war sentiment. I don’t mind the support but I do mind the fact that this man has spent the past 6 years supporting a President he disagrees with on numerous issues. I do not have a problem with his support directly, my problem is that Senator McCain routinely tells us how he is not a political lap dog, he is supposedly the political rebel, the outsider, the unknown.

However, by towing the party line for soo long, and now changing face to pander to voters, I see a side of McCain I never thought I would. I see a sell out who may be no better for our country than the current sell out running this country. I hope I am wrong; I want to support this man. However, recent actions lead me to believe a different view of this man is being formed and not just by myself but by many middle of the road voters.
