Is NAACP Address By President Bush Pandering Or Genuine?

President Bush finally spoke to the NAACP, he has avoided the groups’ invitation to speak numerous times but with the recent dip in Republican support many say President Bush had to speak. The issue has rubbed many African Americans wrongly because they see the Republican economic policies as one of the main reasons so many African Americans are unemployed. Many believe that the outsourcing of their manufacturing and call center jobs has devastated the African American culture in America and many African Americans have renewed their dedication to Democratic candidates who favor new policies aimed at making domestic America more competitive for business opportunities. Do you feel that President Bush speaking at an NAACP gathering was a genuine act or was it desperate pandering?

President Bush addressed the NAACP crowd by advising that he is urging the Senate to renew a civil rights law passed in the 1960s that was developed to stop racist voting practices in the South. President Bush stated, “President Johnson called the right to vote the lifeblood of our democracy. That was true then and it remains true today…I understand that racism still lingers in America…It’s a lot easier to change a law than to change a human heart. And I understand that many African-Americans distrust my political party….I consider it a tragedy that the party of Abraham Lincoln let go of its historical ties with the African-American community. For too long, my party wrote off the African-American vote, and many African-Americans wrote off the Republican Party.”

President Bush should be advised that its not just African Americans who do not trust Republican candidates, its white Americans as well. It’s the Republican policies that have allowed the outsourcing of America that both groups distrust, not just individuals. The problem is with policy not really party, Black America does not Republicans because they feel they have been sold out; White America is feeling this way as well.

Bush has declined previous invitations to address the NAACP convention but many feel that with sagging approval ratings and very bad 2006 Republican election forecasts, President Bush had to step up to the plate and address the group. When he spoke he was introduced by NAACP head Bruce Gordon.

President Bush said he saw his attendance at the convention as a moment of opportunity to celebrate the civil rights movement and the accomplishments of the NAACP, others say it was an opportunity to try and save some face for the Republican party.

You can outsource jobs but trust is a whole other issue, that has to be earned and the outsourcing friendly policies of the current Republican Congress, Senate, and Presidency have numerous African Americans concerned.
