Is the border concern all of the sudden being shown by politicians fact or fiction? Are we to believe that a switch was turned on and now all of the sudden they care? Just as importantly, did anyone notice that the wages for the illegal immigrants will be the going rate or minimum wage, whichever is higher? All this will really do is create the need for more illegal immigrants.
Why would farmers, or landscapers, hire people at the going rate when they can get black market help much cheaper? In the end we need a better policy than a guest worker visa program because this will not curb the enthusiasm for cheap illegal help. The amnesty granted workers will just get undercut by a new group of illegals and thus the degradation of American life falls more.
The Senate signaled overwhelming support Monday for President Bush’s plan to dispatch National Guard troops to states along the Mexican border. What did anyone expect, it is a Republican controlled Senate, did you expect them to buck the President? The problem I have with the whole policy is that no tour of duty will exceed 21 days and National Guard troops would be excluded from search, seizure, and arrest. Supposedly their job would be to support the Border Patrol, but what the border patrol has been saying for years is that they need more individuals who can search, seize, and arrest, so what does this policy really accomplish?
We must also remember that this policy actually takes training from the National Guard troops as their two week obligation will actually be met by the pencil pushing at our borders. Once again this Administration has taken the finest fighting force in the world and tried to make then night watchmen and security guards. These are soldiers; they should be used in such a manner, not as support for office functions.
Ask the fine men and women of the military who frequent the Arrgghhh site, ask them how they would feel being relegated to stand and guard duty. These are soldiers and they should be used properly, not as political pawns.
