The Iranian President wrote a letter and it was received by the President of the United States. It may not have been the most well constructed letter, or even contained much intelligence, but it was communication and with that a door has been opened. I understand the letter was not very complimentary to President Bush, or America, but at least he has a chance for dialect. He can respond and react and this will allow the world to see that President Bush is not a dictator as many rogue leaders in the world claim him to be. The letter is an opportunity and President Bush should seize it. He should use it for all its worth and call out the Iranian President on issues that need to be resolved, no more talking through Condoleezza Rice, or Dick Cheney, its time the President addressed this issue head on and once and for all get all of the dirty laundry out in the open. Invite the Iranian leader to America for top level talks, I bet this would get the worlds attention as well as his own peoples. The ball to acquiesce would then be in their court and it would be up to them to make the bad PR choice of not showing up.
Iran’s president declared in his letter to President Bush that democracy has failed worldwide, he went as far as to state, “an ever-increasing global hatred” in regards to the image of the United States Government. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was quick to attack the letter and its writer but really its not her place, President Bush is not a mommas boy and he does not need to hide behind Condi’s apron, he can come out and speak his mind himself, a matter of fact I think that’s what we all want anyways.
Has anyone heard the Presidents response to this letter? Condi stated, “This letter is not the place that one would find an opening to engage on the nuclear issue or anything of the sort…It isn’t addressing the issues that we’re dealing with in a concrete way…There’s nothing in here that would suggest that we’re on any different course than we were before we got the letter.” These are expected statements from the Secretary of State, what has the president said?
The letter itself gave a dissertation on how and why democracy is failing as well as the Iranian perception of America abroad. The letter from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made only small reference to Iran’s nuclear intentions but even these were tainted with anti-Jewish sentiment. The Iranian president stated he would like to know why any technological and scientific achievement reached in the Middle East region is translated into and portrayed as a threat to the Zionist regime. The letter then goes on to say that America has wasted its money in Iraq and that they should have done more humanitarian things with the money.
As I stated before, its not the content of the letter that’s important as much as the symbolism of it. We now have a chance to call them out and make them answer questions we desperately want answered. They invited us to respond and we should take this opportunity to ask them to engage us. If they deny us then we gain more world support, if they engage us then maybe we help save the world, either way engaging is a win\win for the U.S..
