It sounds like the Gas rage we see daily all over the roads has struck the nerves of Washington drivers and even Vice president Dick Cheney is showing some gasoholic road rage. The strange thing is that Dick is in Europe and we all know he never drives. So can someone please tell the Vice President to take it easy over there in Eastern Europe, or at least be cordial while he is in the Baltic region?
He is castrating the Russian government for its recent Gazprom behavior issues but he needs to just chill. Dick Cheneys’ recent rhetoric sounds like cold war saber rattling all over again and this went out with the fall of the Berlin Wall, what is the Veep doing over there and why is he so vehemently doing it? We need to be building more bridges not burning them down. Cheney should redirect some of that gas angst towards companies that are pile driving innocent Americans not waste it on useless rhetoric regarding Russia’s misbehaving with the Ukraine.
Vice President Dick Cheney told a conference of Eastern European leaders that, “Russia under President Vladimir Putin has recently unfairly and improperly restricted the rights of the people. The Vice President may have a point but he does not need to make it in the Baltic region? Cheney cautioned that such actions could affect relations with other countries. He went on to state, “No legitimate interest is served when oil and gas become tools of intimidation or blackmail, either by supply manipulation or attempts to monopolize transportation…And no one can justify actions that undermine the territorial integrity of a neighbor, or interfere with democratic movements.”
The Vice Presidents remarks appear to reflect his opinion on the Gazprom issue that recently occurred in Russia. Russia utilized the state-controlled gas company Gazprom to cut off supplies of natural gas to Ukraine. Gazprom reportedly supplies almost %25 percent of the natural gas utilized by European countries; the majority of that gas is piped through the Ukraine which reportedly tampered with pipelines when the gas was cutoff. The issue brought to head a major concern about stability in the region.
President Bush has a good relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and relations are good between the two countries. Bush will be attending a summit that Putin will be hosting. The close relationship president Bush has with Russia makes Cheneys’ remarks all the more irrational and extraordinary. I think these two need to get on the same page and share a common face in regards to eastern Europe. Russia and its country are needed as strong allies and America should do all it can to make sure the relationship stays strong.
Can someone please tell the Vice president that the cold war ended and that things have lightened up in the region? He can lose the tude and relax a little bit.
