One flu over the cuckoo cuckoo’s nest was a great movie; I sure hope it’s not the basic gist of our civil preparedness for dealing with the potential Bird Flu issue that just won’t go away. I can see it now, our government leaders hovering over us in choppers and jets as we try and deal with the travesty of un-preparedness on the ground. Just how ready are we? We knew Katrina was coming and look how bad that was. Are we really prepared for a disease to which we have no known cure? People avoid the question of the Bird Flu just like they avoided the word ‘Outsourcing’, look how good avoidance worked out for us in that case.
There is a major network movie coming next Tuesday which depicts the pain and confusion a pandemic Bird Flu outbreak would cause in America if the outbreak where to occur under Americas’ current situation. Many say the movie is a true depiction of America’s un-preparedness for this potentially devastating virus, others say the movie is myth and hyperbole. Regardless of what you choose to believe the Bush Administration is gearing up its PR process to alleviate any anxiety the movie will cause. The movie is set to show on Tuesday and the Bush Administration has advised that it will unveil its implementation plan for how the nation should respond if such a pandemic hits. Do you feel safe that America actually has a failsafe plan in place? After the Katrina disaster how much faith do you really have?
Reportedly the Bush Administration has made plans for a worst-case scenario: A flu pandemic that kills 2 million people in the United States and puts 40 percent of the workforce out of commission.
The report is supposedly documenting the process the Bush Administration would adhere to in regards to any flu outbreak but many say the plan is basically geared toward an outbreak of the Avian Influenza, better known as the Bird Flu.
The White House is careful to announce that currently there is no need for alarm because an epidemic has not been found yet. They merely want to try and reassure the American people that they do have a plan in place. Hopefully they have better planners than they have for the Iraq war. The plan will reportedly cover both government and nongovernmental actions to prepare for a possible pandemic.
How safe do you feel?
