For those who follow closely the stories of Mafioso, or if you are a dedicated fan of the Sopranos, or the Godfather Trilogy, then here is some interesting news for you. The individual the movie ‘Godfather’ was based on, Bernardo Provenzano, was apprehended in Italy today. Many see this as justice, others see it as the end of a romantic era, either way, a unique era in history has been brought to closure and I think the man who has inspired so much imagination in the world deserves a moment of notice.
I am not saying I support, or abhor, the individual, I am merely saying that this individual has affected numerous cultures throughout the world and I feel it is noteworthy to reflect on who this individual is.
Bernardo Provenzano was born January 31, 1933. He lived the majority of his life as a member of the Sicilian Mafia, what we commonly hear referred to as ‘La Cosa Nostra’. Provenzano is suspected of being the head of the Corleonesi family, which is a Mafia Family from the village of Corleone. The title this position actually refers to is the title of ‘capo di tutti capi’ , the boss of bosses for the entire Sicilian Mafia. Provenzano was also known by the nickname is Binnu u tratturi, ‘the farm tractor’ because of his reputation for mowing people down. Provenzano was raised in Corleone and reportedly joined the Italian Mafia during young adulthood. .Provenzano has not been publicly seen since the early 1960s. Provenzano has been a fugitive from the law ever since his indictment for murder in 1963.
