It has been rumored for months but not the rumors are being substantiated by fact. It has been reported that Vice President Dick Cheney’s former top aide, Scooter Libby, testified under oath, that President Bush authorized the release of parts of a classified report on Iraq as a way to deny disapproval of his policy to go to war in Iraq.
It was widely reported previously that Scooter Libby was testifying to a federal grand jury that he was authorized by Vice President Dick Cheney, President George Bush, to inadvertently on purpose disclose classified information during the summer of 2003. Many thought Libby would clam up and take the bullet for the Bush Administration but they were wrong on this one. Libby opened up faster than anyone imagined. The inadvertent leak was theoretically supposed to reveal classified information to the media in order to support the Bush Administrations’ use of prewar intelligence to make a case for going to war.
Reporter Murray Waas has been chastised by Conservatives for writing an article that detailed information about the whole leak issue. Waas wrote that the information he had attained came from attorneys familiar with the issue, and from court records. Waas began to write about the details and Conservatives were quick to try and denounce him. Regardless of Waas’ credibility in being a newshound for government stories, he was still persecuted. Waas is also credited with breaking the Valerie Plame - CIA leak case for the National Journal.
The validation of the previous accusations is a big punch in the stomach for the Bush Administration. The President is already experiencing sagging support numbers and this news will only further drive down his support numbers. Reportedly Libby detailed specifics about the leak of information involving the National Intelligence Estimate regarding Saddam Husseins’ alleged hard work to build up nuclear weapons.
It is not illegal to authorize leaks but it does tend to besmirch individuals’ credibility. This should also teach politicians a lesson. If you sleep with dogs you will get fleas, if you rough them up and throw them out then you will get bit. And this dogs’ bite is way worse than his bark. This issue will once again cause pains to the embittered Bush Administration. Good Luck weathering this one GW.
