Sadaam Is Accused, Tell Me Something I didn’t Know

The Iraq war has cost us hundreds of billions of dollars, thousands of lost souls, and tens of thousands of injured soldiers, and for this price I will not celebrate the announcement that Sadaam Hussein will face the charge of genocide. To come up with the verdict that Sadaam Hussein is guilty of Genocide is like accepting the booby prize at the state fair, I want more for the sacrifice our country has made. Oops, let me recant, Sadaam is innocent until proven guilty so I will say allegedly guilty of Genocide. Is this really the big bang for our buck?

The whole world knows he committed these crimes, this is no great revelation. What we need to know is how we can fix Iraq, we should not celebrate something as useless as the official declaration of charges against Sadaam Hussein. I want more focus on the Iraqi Government Issue and way less focus on Sadaams’ trial. America, and Iraq, cannot move forward when we celebrate hollow victories of the past. It is a good thing Sadaam will face justice on the charges of crimes against humanity. However, we must remember that there is a country that needs to stand on its own and that should be the focus. Sadaam is marginalized, its time to move forward.

Iraqi chief investigative judge Ra’id Juhi announced Tuesday that Sadaam will be formally charged. However, we all already knew he did this, I am glad he will face the charges but really this does nothing for the current situation. President bush keeps reminding us of how much better it is in Iraq with Sadaam removed but I don’t recall this much upheaval, and civil unrest, when he was in charge. This is not to say I would put him back in charge, it is merely to say that I don’t feel enough progress has been made to where the President can boast about his accomplishments in Iraq. Many say the policy is teetering on failure and the tipping point for the war is close at hand.

Judge Ra’id Juhi said that investigators had completed their investigative work and were now gathering witnesses and evidence to prepare to go to trial. The trial may be symbolic for those who lost loved ones under sadaams’ rule, and for this I am glad. However, we must not lose focus on the small victories and forget the bigger picture. We need to enact change in Iraq and help them prop up a Democratic government. This was not the mission going in but I guess it’s what it is now. We need to complete this mission and bring our boys back home, successfully.
