Hurricane season is traditionally months away but when Representative Tom DeLay stepped down you could hear the storm clouds rumbling. The Democrats reportedly sense blood in the water and they are calling in all sharks to try and create a feeding frenzy that would result in new control of the Senate for the Democratic Party. The Democrats also have na eye on the House as well. However, Republicans say that they are just fine and any perceived weaknesses in their party or merely hyperbole.
The announcement by Congressman Tom DeLay, which stated that he would resign from Congress, was what many Democrats have called the beginning to sweeping changes for the American people. The Democrats are hoping to bring about sweeping changes in Washington with slogans and campaigns designed to mimic the Republican campaigns of the 80’s. The democrats are basing their campaigns on America’s feelings about the war in Iraq, Outsourcing, and Immigration.
Dick Armey stated that “Republicans have set the stage for the Democrats. However, the Democrats need to offer an alternative rather than just attack. I think it takes a double-barreled shotgun, and they’ve only got one barrel.” The problem is, many in America perceive the support for the President, and the Republican party, as weak, one shot may be all it takes.
Public dissatisfaction with the Presidents recent Port security issue, as well as their growing dismay with the war in Iraq, and his Immigration stance, are all combining to empower the Democrats to believe they can offer America a better alternative than they currently have. The Democrats want to offer a check and balance to the President.
Many feel a check and balance is needed because of the Presidents actions in regards to the wiretapping issue as well as the DP World ports issue, and his illegal immigration policy. Many also remember his failed reform programs.
DeLay was just the opening salvo in what will be an interesting election year. Congressman DeLay stated that his decision to call it quits helps prevent Democrats from gaining the confluence of forces they need, not to mention reducing the chances that the GOP would lose his Texas seat.
