Delphi is not the Alpha, and it is not the Omega, it is just another casualty of the environment we have created here in America. We elected a government that allowed businesses to outsource or jobs; we did nothing at the time unless it directly affected our job. Many said hey, it’s not my problem. Then as businesses in other areas began doing it, it became more and more of our problem.
Now the outsourcing dam has broken down, the levee was smashed, and like a lone sandbag against the tide, Delphi tries to make a stand. However, we as Americans have left Delphi to stand alone. We have allowed the outsourcing of our lives and integrity. We allowed business greed to get a stranglehold on America and now the elite of America do not want to relinquish. Why do you think so many support the proposed immigration bill? It’s not because it is fair, or legal, its because it benefits the already haves and keeps any of the have-nots from ever rising up again. Cry if you want but this has been a growing problem for years and everyone turned a deaf ear, now we are almost defenseless against it.
Delphi has said they will try and break the union contract; all that will do is speed up the process and eliminate their jobs for sure. They might as well gas up the outsourcing boats if they do this because it will be all over for them. It’s not their fault, America as a whole has created this situation. Today its Delphi, tomorrow its your job. Don’t think so, just look at your friends and family, how many of them have lost their jobs to outsourcing or cheaply brought in foreign labor? Your time is coming, you can ignore it if you want but unless you own the company you are as replaceable as anyone else and trust me, most likely you are being sized up for replacement, you just have not been told yet.
I give the Delphi workers credit, they talk a tough game. However, talk is not enough, words without action are fruitless and there is no action other than concession that will resolve the issue. Again, it’s not Delphi’s fault, its America’s and we have not stood up for our American brothers and sisters for a long time. Just look at what President Bush is doing. The majority of America does not want the immigration bill passed as is. However, the President is pushing forward anyways. Gas prices are slamming America, what has President Bush done here? Nothing, and that’s all he will do. The war in Iraq, America wants out but Bush wants to stay for as long as he says it will take regardless of American opinion. I guess you see, he does not listen to you anymore, not be cause he does not want to but because he does not have to. You gave up and he knows it. Now he walks over you like so many others do and still you do nothing.
When will America take back its place of pride and integrity? When will we stand up for Americans instead of selling out our own? Delphi is not the beginning or the end, its just part of the road America has been going down. Let’s see if we can change the path and make it better.
Bush Needs To Help Delphi And All Other American Businesses
The fact that delphi’s labor and benefits costs are 25% higher than similar suppliers to Ford and Toyota, and that they take 30% longer to produce parts probably has nothing to do with their problems. Let’s face it, we should all have $104,000/yr in wages and benefits, right.
Delphi, and the US auto industry have been dying a slow death since 1972’s oil embargo. The UAW refuses to budge on certain wage and benefit issues, including 90% pay for those who are laid off. And we wonder why it costs GM $2600 more to build a car in the US than Toyota.
In response to Crazy Politico:
Do you think it’s odd that autoworker wages and benefits combine for only around 8% of the cost of producing a vehicle? And that was prior to the 2007 UAW contract that saw the cutting in half of wages, elimination of health care and discontinuation of pensions for all Ford, GM, Chrysler, Delphi, etc. workers. So that percentage is now closer to around 4% of total production costs. And why if it’s so horrifying to (prior to 2007) cost $2,600 more to build a car in the U.S., do all U.S. dealerships offer $3,000 and $4,000 rebates on new cars on the regular? Could it be that it’s not the workers’ trying to earn a living, but the management too distracted with trying to steal that living from workers that results in ineptitude from the PR department to the advertising department to the drafting board to the board room? We all know that’s where 95% of the production costs are being flushed - and always have been. But it’s far better to blame the lowly shop worker and his unreasonable demands not to discount his quality of life down to that of a oppressed worker in China making sparks plugs on the cheap with a barrel pointed at his head, right? And is it true that ignorant, callous blowhard is an actual MBA course, buddy?
Good point Crazy Politico but what about the poor Chrysler employees who just lost their jobs to outsourcing at Chrysler, these guys were just innocent victims of cowardly outsurcing by sellout companies. How long will America race to the bottom before we are all living like they do in India, and China, and worse.
