Abdul Rahman Throws Kink In Bush Plans For Afghanistan

Abdul Rahman is the man of the hour and God bless his soul for standing up for his beliefs in the face of overwhelming Islamic terror. I still cannot believe that President Bush would have us believe change is on the way and yet this is the new government we helped prop up. A government that allows creation of a constitution that allows a man to be put to death because he converts from Islam to Christianity. Is this the change our men and woman are dying for in Afghanistan?

Is the government America is going into debt for? I am disgusted and let down, I feel betrayed and misled. How can this happen and more importantly how can we be involved in supporting this type of regimen. And don’t tell me change is on the way because this kind of event has never happened before in the history of this country so this is the new Afghanistan, we will not be tail-wagged by any different version the Bush Administration offers.

During the days of the Taliban it was known that those promoting Christianity in Afghanistan could be arrested and those converting from Islam could be tortured and publicly executed. However, there was never any official backing of this policy by law abiding citizens or public officials. However, in the case of Abdul Rahman there is public official support and this is what bothers me.

As a way to save face the newly elected Afghan government has advised that they are seeking to declare Abdul Rahman insane and this will be reason to disallow the death penalty. However, Abdul says he is not crazy and I cannot believe a government would resort to such extremes rather than change their radically racist policy. This is absurd and disturbing.

How can we, the American public, allow this type of blatant racism and discrimination? How can we also allow our tax dollars go to this country in support of such a policy? Imagine a Catholic, Or Jewish, individual who works everyday, and pays his taxes, has his money sent overseas in foreign aid, which goes to pay for the judges salary who is overseeing this case. How can you justify this to that person?

Everything was supposed to transform after U.S.-led forces ousted the fundamentalist Taliban regime, but the case Abdul Rahman has me wondering if any real progress has been made in the war on terrorism or the promise of democracy.

I do not doubt President Bush and his word to bring democracy to the idle East, I am just saying that you can lad a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Maybe these cultures are just not ready, or accepting, of democracy. If this is the case then I just want the truth from President bush, I don’t want to hear how good it is when in reality it is terrible. Is Afghanistan progressing or regressing? This is what we really need to know.

I also want to know how we can deal with a government that practices such an open from of oppression.
