Brother can you spare a dime; it’s an old saying from the 1920’s made famous by the Bugs Bunny cartoon of the 60’s. However the saying can now be mentioned in reference to our domestic intelligence agencies. Case in point, it is being reported that recent budget constraints are forcing some FBI agents to operate without e-mail accounts, this as described to the agency’s top official in New York.
How can we applaud communication gains in Iraq when we are not maintaining our security infrastructure right here in America? The mom and pop stores throughout the neighborhood have e-mail addresses, how can FBI agents not be provided the basic necessities of today’s technology? If Bush was elected on security issues then he better step up big time in regards to this issue.
There are endless complaints being offered from un-named sources within the bureau who are stating that the FBI is becoming an under-funded program. How can we justify wasting billions in Iraq before we supply our own domestic safeguards with the proper funding and material they need to succeed? This has to end. We need to first make sure America as what it needs and then we should share what’s left. I cannot see any reasonable reason that the FBI has to hurt, or want, for anything, when we so casually drop billions on Iraq, and Afghanistan.
FBI officials in Washington denied that cost-cutting was putting agents at a disadvantage but what else can they say? There jobs are directly affected by the governments guidance, do you really think they would bite the hand that feeds them. However, we must remember that we have stirred the bee’s nest up and if we are not 100% prepared we will get struck again here in America..
It was stated that spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan advised that e-mail addresses are still being assigned, and all employees will all have e-mail accounts by the end of the year. But how can this happen in New York? And if its this bad in New York how bad is it everywhere else?
Senator Charles Schumer stated, “The FBI should have the tools it needs to fight terrorism and crime in the 21st century, most of all in New York City, and one of the most effective means of communications is e-mail and the Internet…FBI agents not having e-mail or Internet access is much too much a pre-9/11 mentality.”
