Freedoms of speech, and press, have marched on and I for one am glad that the public is not backing down. Politicians like President Bush have taken the PC road in regards to the Mohammad Cartoon issue. However, they know what the right thing to do is and yet they skirt around the issue. For too long have we let crimes be committed in the name of Islam while we look the other way. Countries like Iran, and Iraq, have committed heinous crimes in the name of Islam yet we did nothing. Now, the Radical form of Islam have screamed out they want their ideals followed when it comes to the Mohammad Cartoons, these same individuals who uphold the fine moral standards of, kidnapping, torturing, beheading, and raping, of innocent woman, and children. It’s about time people stand up to their racist actions and I applaud those who do.
The Mohammad Cartoons have been published for months now and there was little repercussion. However, a Radical Islamic leader was not happy that the issue did not incite violence. Therefore he carried his fiery rhetoric into the heart of the Middle East and proceeded to exaggerate the situation until it rallied enough support to create mindless violence in response to the cartoons.
President Bush spoke out against the violence, as did many other world leaders. However, what they needed to do was tell the world that they support the freedom of speech more than they abhor the violence. The world needs to know that our freedoms will not be oppressed just because some feel slighted. I am not advocating the intimidation, or offending, of any group. I am merely saying that there are numerous things that upset me throughout the day; I can’t demand they all just be taken away.
Freedoms are something we fight for and they deserve to be supported.
I applaud the gatherers in Toronto as well as all the others around the world. Our freedoms should be defended like this more often. We need to let the terrorists know they have not succeeded in changing our way of life because if they do then they have won a battle.
