The U.S. military prison at Abu Ghraib is going away and I believe the decision has been one we have needed for a long time. The prison has become a symbol for Radicals to use as an inspiration to Iraqi’s as a way to build up hate and aggression for foreigners in their country. By closing the prison we are taking away a symbol of hatred and this can only help the American cause in Iraq. We also need to rid the American people of the imagery of this prison because it reminds us of how failed the Iraq policy is at times. This is a good starting point in the mission to build new support and direction for our mission in Iraq. I am very positive about the closing of this prison.
The prison was one of Saddam Hussein’s main torture centers, which is the reason American forces took it over. However, things went bad and the prison soon became a symbol of indignity for the American occupation of Iraq.
There are reportedly about 4,500 inmates held at the prison, the majority are being held on suspicion of participating in insurgent activity. These individuals will be relocated to a new facility constructed at the Baghdad airport military base.
There are believe to be around 15,000 insurgents currently being held in prison in Iraq, they are separated and housed in various prisons throughout the country.
The majority of inmates at Abu Ghraib are Sunni Arabs, hey must be relocated in prisons with other Sunni Arabs to avoid sectarian violence outbreaks in the jails. The Sunni’s were the governing society under Saddams’ rule; it is the Sunni’s who are believed to be the backbone of the insurgency against U.S.
Many see the act of closing the Abu Ghraib prison as a way to reach out to Sunni politicians. U.S. ambassadors have tried repeatedly to convince Sunnis to be more active in the new government, they hope to prevent an Irai fall into sectarian civil war.
Abu Ghraib Is Symbol Of Disgrace To Islam
