Brokeback Mountain is what the Gay Rights movement thought would bring it into popular acceptance in the mainstream community, and the Academy Awards were supposed to be the coming out party. However, conservatism won out and the Academy Awards ended up breaking the back of the Gay Rights movement not drop kicking it into the mainstream stratosphere.
Gay Rights individuals were geared up to attack the Gay Rights issue with renewed aggression after the Academy Awards show but now after a disappointing night many are rethinking their position. What went wrong, were we mislead by all the hype? Is the Gay Rights movement still gaining acceptance or is it regressing? If you use the movie show awards as a gauge, it is obvious the movement is not where its supporters would have you believe.
With an even more conservative Supreme Court in place today than there was in 2004 many say the Gay Rights movement will be pushed even further onto the backburner. Does this matter to most Americans? If you look at the polls in election states this year, regarding the gay initiative issues, you would have to say that America is moving away from the acceptance of these initiatives. For some Americans that is just fine, for others it is disturbing.
With all of the issues facing America do you feel this issue will be relevant in the 2006 and 2009 elections or will it just fade to black and go away for many years?
