The Iranians have spoken, and spoken repeatedly, but it appears no one really wants to hear their message. They have not deviated one bit from their original statement and it appears they have no intention of ever doing so. So why are we waiting? Why is the issue not being taken to the next level? Are we waiting for the giant mushroom cloud rising up out of Israel before we say, “You know, we should have taken them more seriously.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister was in Japan this week when he issued a statement that his country’s final target is to enrich uranium on Iranian soil, regardless of the Russian proposal to enrich uranium in Russia.
Irans’ Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was in Tokyo on Tuesday to meet with the Japanese Foreign Minister, Taro Aso. The message he delivered has not deviated one bit from any other previously offered statements. And yet the world waits, they think somehow the magic pill will be swallowed and the path will change. I don’t think in this Iranian Presidents lifetime, and maybe not the next. So wait if you want but Iran has a hard line stance and they do not appear to be budging one inch.
Even though Iran says it plans to enrich Uranium, most believe they have already started. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated as much when it said in a report to its board of governors that Iran had already begun uranium enrichment on a very small scale.
Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, but many European countries as well as the United States remain doubtful. These countries believe that the actual nuclear power program is merely a front for a clandestine nuclear weapons program.
The IAEA has already agreed to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council based on its approaching report. The U.N. Security Council will then review the report before deciding what future actions will be taken towards Iran. Is the U.N. moving fast enough? That is a tough call to make, they must stay unbiased and yet they have a responsibility to mankind. They must step up their pace and address the hard facts immediately, their stalling could cause severe problems for the future.
The EU-3 has failed, Russia and China have failed, and America has no chance of convincing them to refrain. So where do we go from here? Do we wait while they may be potentially building up a nuclear arsenal or do we get tough immediately? Can diplomacy ever work with a regimen that is bent on attaining nuclear weapons for means of influence? These are tough times and they are going to require tough decisions.
