Iran Shuns Russian Gesture, What Is Next?

Russia has met with Iran and was not really able to get them to change their course on their position regarding their nuclear ambitions. It appears lately that the president of Iran has come off as more as a 1980’s megalomaniac kind of dictator in the stature of a Doctor Evil than as a world leader. He has been threatening the creation of weapons of mass destruction along with spouting rhetoric about the destruction of Israel, and America. So now that the European Union has failed, Russia has failed, and the discussions with U.N. inspectors have failed, where do we go from here?

Russian and Iranian officials ended two days of talks based on a Russian offer to enrich uranium for Iran. The talks produced no tangible improvements in the issues and left no options open for future prospects. Russian and Iranian negotiators spent two days discussing nothing but the offer from Moscow to enrich uranium for Tehran on Russian soil. The offer was based entirely on Iran completely halting its nuclear enrichment program within its borders, Iran apparently balked at the conditions. The two day discussions ended with both sides saying the talks would continue at a future time, but neither side had a potential date set in the future.

Russia is one of Iran’s largest trading partners; they would like to end this issue without U.N. sanctions. However, it appears that Iran is not concerned with the world opinion of Irans’ actions, they appear to be on a path of their own decision and they are not concerned with public opinion.

The IAEA will meet March 6 and is expected to report Tehran to the Security Council after Iran ended its cooperation with the nuclear watchdog agency.
