The question of whether President Bush’ spy program is illegal has been a heated debate for some time, it has many of his detractors calling for an impeachment. However, the U.S. Attorney General has stated he believes the President has acted in accordance with his powers and the Attorney General is set to explain his beliefs to the Senate Judiciary Committe.
Millions of American people are interested in the domestic spying issue and there are two questions they inevitably ask, “Is this program necessary?” and “Is the program lawful?” Well, according to the Bush Administration, and now the Attorney General, the answer to both of these important questions is ‘yes.’
Gonzales is expected to tell individuals in the Senate Judiciary Committe that the spy program provides the United States with the early warning system it so desperately needed prior to September 10. He will also reiterate that he feels the program is legally justified in association with the terrorist policies past soon after 9-11.
The Attorney General will also detail more information about the spy program, authorized by the president after 9-11, which gives permission the National Security Agency to carry out warrant-less domestic surveillance of communications involving the United States and other countries, effectively allowing them to bypass a secret court put in place to provide such surveillance warrants.
Gonzales is expected to say that the actions are firmly grounded in the president’s constitutional authorities. He is also expected to state that many in Congress, and the Senate, knew about the spy program and that many who are acting aloof of the program now actually knew all along what was going on.
Do the Attorney Generals comments appease the critiques of the President? Many say nothing will persuade them, others say if the Attorney General sanctions the actions as legal then they will abide by his decision. I guess the debate will go on, and it will have many angles of discussion. However, for what its worth, the Attorney General will speak on the subject. Hopefully this will begin to bring an end to all the bickering and a better understanding of why the program was put in place in the first place.
