Lest anyone forget America is still at war in Iraq, and tensions still remain high that a terrorist strike will soon be attempted once again in America. With this in mind the congress quickly voted to extend the Patriot Act temporarily a few more weeks. So what is being done to protect us after this time? They will try to hammer out the details in their normal partisan\bi-partisan manner.
The House took a vocal vote without taking roll call, this is an extraordinary circumstance but it underscores the importance. The House approved the temporary extension and zipped the Act over to the Senate for their approval. Many feel the Act will receive temporary approval in the Senate as well.
The original Act was going to pass easily until late additions were thrown in, then the partisan bickering began and we have been stuck with temporary extensions ever since.
Is it right that partisan politics is jeopardizing this policy? Many think it is an atrocity in speaking of how our protection is being manipulated in the Congress, and Senate. Others argue that the Patriot Act is a total violation of our civil rights, and liberties. Regardless of what you base your argument on the fact is we need these provisions in the here and now. Remember, when you die because of a terrorist act you have very little political, or civil, rights left.
Therefore, let’s urge our elected officials to get this Act ratified and approved, then let’s worry about the little things. Like it or not we need the protection this policy provides. Do I want my liberties in an area that is a shade of grey? NO. Do I want to live to discuss these types of arguments? Yes. As a result of my wanting to be around I must urge we do all we can to get our elected officials to pass this Act once and for all.
