Microsoft: Are You Ready For W32/MyWife.d@MM!M24 worm
How should congress deal with computer crimes in regards to hackers, and virus spreaders? This is a question bandied about for years, but as computers become more and more a part of our everyday life we must ask, how will these issues be addressed?
In case you did not know there is a major computer Worm looming that is threatening major destruction Friday. Friday is being referred to as D-day I nthe computer community. D-Day as in “destruction day.”.
The virus is also referred to as the W32/MyWife.d@MM!M24 worm, MyWife.d!M24, MyWife.d!M24, , Blackworm, Blackmal, Nyxem, and Kama Sutra.
There was an e-mail worm circulated a while back that has been waiting on computers to hit a certain day so it can be launched, that day is Friday Feb 3rd. The virus has a few names, it is referred to as “Nyxem.E,” “CME-24,” “BlackWorm,” “Mywife.E,” “KamaSutra” and “VB.bi,” among other various names, on Friday the code is set to detonate its computer-deadly payload, make sure you are protected.
What will the problem do? It supposedly will corrupt all documents on a infected machine with the following file extensions: .dmp, .doc, .mdb, .mde, .pdf, .psd, .ppt, .pps, .rar, .xls and .zip.
That means almost all files created using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel or Microsoft PowerPoint could be deleted and unrecoverable permanently. The Worm is also targeting Adobe Photoshop files, PDF files used by Adobe Acrobat and rival PDF readers, as well as several types of database and compression files.
The worm will attempt to disable your anti-virus software if it is not current, make sure you are up to date on the virus definitions.
Microsoft Corp. issued an advisory Tuesday forewarning customers about the malicious worm, which affects most versions of Windows. When these malicious individuals are caught who released the Worm, do you have any idea what will happen to them? If you said no don’t worry, you are not alone. Our court system is still trying to figure out how to deal with these types of criminals as well. However, from the hackers, and crackers, point of view, they say they are doing a service by exposing security flaws. Lets see how many thank you letters they receive.
