On Tuesday President Bush will deliver his state of the union address. I believe its time we reflect on last years state of the union and see just how far the President has brought us in one year. He made brash statements and small promises, did he back these up? The proof has been documented so lets read the facts and see how far the president has brought us in one year. Granted he is the President in one of the toughest times in history. However, a promise is a promise; let’s see if he kept them.
He began by stating, “We’ve been placed in office by the votes of the people we serve. And tonight that is a privilege we share with newly-elected leaders of Afghanistan, the Palestinian Territories, Ukraine, and a free and sovereign Iraq.” I think we know how he feels about the Palestinian elections, and for all the hoopla regarding the Iraqi elections, has anything really changed since then?
He then goes on to say, “Tonight, with a healthy, growing economy, with more Americans going back to work, with our nation an active force for good in the world.” Well I am not sure how many Americans are back to work but I know of quite a few who have been laid off recently, I sure hope he does not make this statement again.
Next the President states, “First, we must be good stewards of this economy, and renew the great institutions on which millions of our fellow citizens rely. America’s economy is the fastest growing of any major industrialized nation.” I am not sure if he knows this but the economies of India, and China, have far outgrown America, I hope he has a plan to adjust this and return us to the top once again. It’s a nice statement but it has no real substance.
The President went on to release this blurb, “America’s prosperity requires restraining the spending appetite of the federal government.” I think his increases on the war in Iraq alone blows away this comment. Maybe this should not be repeated either.
The President then stated, “To make our economy stronger and more dynamic, we must prepare a rising generation to fill the jobs of the 21st century. Under the ‘No Child Left Behind Act’, standards are higher, test scores are on the rise, and we’re closing the achievement gap for minority students. Now we must demand better results from our high schools, so every high school diploma is a ticket to success.” Hindsight may be 20\20 but lest anyone forget, the government has been taken to court repeatedly the last year because they have not kept up proper funding for this program. Now what can be said?
Next we have this statement, “To make our economy stronger and more productive, we must make health care more affordable, and give families greater access to good coverage.” Does anyone know of anyone who has cheaper and better coverage this year? Big mis-step here. Everyone I know who enrolled in a health care choice this year is paying more, are you?
