Is our culture being pushed upon societies not yet ready to live inside its ideals? American companies push to have native societies brought into the 21st century of technology so that they can sell their goods to these people. Likewise, our politicians are trying to push our form of democracy on countries that may also not be ready to live inside its ideals. One only need look at two recent examples, the riots in Palestine, and the insurgency in Iraq, to see this idea has legs.
We are pushing westernized ideals, and technology, on countries not yet ready for them. Cultivation, and change, takes time in society. However, in our need to open new markets we are jeopardizing mankind as a whole. If you give technology to underdeveloped, and undereducated, societies, they will utilize this technology as a violent way to display their frustration. Look at North Korea, Iran, and even Libya. We want to sell them technology irregardless of whether their society is set up to support the use of the technology. Then when the technology gets used as a weapon we act like we had no idea, who is to blame?
In our rampage to sell to the un-industrialized world we are dragging whole countries through stages of culture shock at mind-numbing speeds, destroying native culture along the way, we are changing the way people of these societies live with no real concern for their well being. We are destroying culture and obliterating human standards, all as a way to sell to a larger public.
Are the militants, and terrorists, a part of modern society, or a creation of modern society? Do we need to slow down the pace of globalization so that native cultures have a better chance at adapting to the new world, or is our greed exceeding our intelligence?
