Rather than fight the war on terror, should we be fighting the war on globalization? Globalization was thought of as a few major companies dominating trade amongst themselves while supplying the world with their goods. However, what it has caused is food shortages, resource shortages, faster spreads of viruses, and much more civil war from the underdeveloped nations. Is this a policy that should be re-thought by world leaders?
Many say globalization has done nothing but lead to the so called ‘Race to the Bottom’, it does not necessarily have to, but it has.
Globalization works in the perfect of two scenarios, if you have unending supplies for all who need the resources, or if you have a few countries dominating the trade markets. Right now there is neither situation, and the world is suffering from the culture shock of this policy.
We have global warming as a result of globalization, as more countries develop more factories we are creating more toxins, many say industrialization can be adjusted for by mother nature, but not at the current rate of industrial expansion.
We have global hunger caused because farming is being abandoned in many native cultures. Many native culture societies around the world are rapidly losing their land to developers, their workers to new companies, and their families are leaving farms that have been operating for generations. Again, the world could adapt, but not at the rate it is currently moving.
The threats of global pandemics are now more dangerous than ever. As cultures live in certain areas their bodies build natural defenses against certain viruses, and bacteria. However, with the spread of global markets came the advent of global traveling, speedy global traveling. Previously doctors had the time to watch a virus spread through a society, they had time to come up with a defense. However, with modern travel, a small group of ten individuals working as cheap labor by an outsourcing company, can be flown all over the world in less than a day, thus they can spread a deadly virus globally in less than 24 hours.
We have numerous civil wars, and unrest, in many underdeveloped nations. These so-called underdeveloped nations were fine living in their normal cultural society. However, industrialists thought that by introducing new technology to primitive societies, we could create new markets for our products. However, the proper social institutions were not in place during our rapid introduction of new technology to these societies. The result, a failed policy, and far worse, civil unrest. We gave these societies a taste of the so-called good life and then left them high and dry when we finally realized we could not sell our products to them. The affected people however have been changed forever, and now they have limited education but access to modern day weapons, this is definitely a recipe for disaster and we have been cooking it up for a long time.
So what can be done? Is there any way to resolve this issue? Yes there is. We actually need to slow down the globalization of the world, let it settle to a more acceptable pace and then yes, the world can acclimate itself without heading towards destruction.
