Murtha Explains Method To His Perceived Madness

Representative John Murtha spoke out on 60 minutes; he explained his recent statements regarding withdrawal, his detractors, and his opinion on Iraqi civil war. Like him or not, this Representative has become a lightening rod of emotion when the Iraqi war is discussed.

Representative Murtha spoke out in support of troop reduction by stating that he feels our troops have become the number one target of terrorists in Iraq. He said he feels our presence has become a thorn in the average Iraqi’s side. He feels that if we leave, many of the insurgents will relinquish their anti-government stances.

The Representative also stated that he feels civil war is inevitable. He compared current Iraq to the instance of American civil war over 200 years ago. Representative Murtha stated, one side will prevail in the civil war and that is the government we will deal with. It appeared as though Representative Murtha feels that civil war appears to be part of the necessary process.

He also responded to criticism he has received by both politicians, and the media. The congressman stated that he understands the criticism and appreciates individuals speaking out about their concerns. However, he feels that the majority of Americans, and American soldiers, are in line with his ideals and beliefs. He advised that his military career gives him a unique perspective on war that many in the current Bush administration do not have.

The Representative stated that he feels the terrorists actually want us to stay in Iraq because he feels they (Terrorists) believe the war is draining Americas resources dry, and this allows for less assets to be utilized globally. Thus we may win the war but eventually lose the battle. This was definitely and interesting theory provided by the congressman.

Like him or not, he did provide answers to many questions people have raised about his recent comments. He stood up and made himself accountable for his accusations. You may not appreciate his points of view but you must respect the fact that he is not running and hiding from criticism. He may be wrong on many issues but at least he is a man who stands behind his convictions.

Frankly, I disagree with you. I don’t care whether Murtha is running and hiding from criticism, just as I don’t care if Louis Fararkkhanis running and hiding from criticism. Loony views are loony views – it doesn’t matter how sincere the holder of those views is.

I think Murtha is wrong and that he’s trying to use our soldiers for partisam political gain in much the same way that John Kerry and his Winter Soldier compatriots did during Vietnam. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now and I don’t care how Murtha or anyone else dresses it up.

Btw., your site runs slow as molasses on Firefox 1.5. I think you may be hitting the Javascript a bit heavily or something…

  2. Doug, your opinion is greatly appreciated as always. There are many individuals who dislike this man and his opinion. I may not agree with all of his theories, and ideas, but I enjoyed getting insight into why he made these remarks. I agree with you, no soldiers should ever be used as political pawns, one can only hope there is still a more noble cause behind the deployment of our brave men and woman, than a politcal position.

  4. First, it’s “you may win the battle but lose the war”, not the other way around.

Second, it’s a nice thought but he completely misses the implications of a civil war spilling over into Jordan, Syria and Iran (as much as Iran is a pain with the nuclear situation, I don’t think we want to see their troops lined up on the border or going in to assist the Shia in the south). And, let’s not forget about the Turks who would be glad to muck around in Kurdistan on any pretext.

    It’s short sighted.

As for dealing with who ever is in charge at that moment, that’s assuming it ends up being anyone that wants to deal with us once we abandon them and let syria, Iran or Turkey muck around with their government.

Not to mention that instability will provide AQ the ability to hang out where ever they want with impunity.

It’s bad. It also harks back to the bad ol’ days of “any SOB as long as he’s our SOB” which got us in this mess in the first place.

In short, this isn’t a new idea. Murtha wants to go back to the pre 9/11 days.

While it is true that AQ and cohorts would like to see us use up our resources and cash, it’s also true that we are doing the same to them and can do it on a smaller scale as we withdraw large amounts of troops and put trained Iraqi troops in loyal to the new democracy that will not be so interested in

I strongly disagree with Murtha’s plan. He needs a new one, not a wish and a prayer for the “good ol’ days”.

  5. Thanks for your thoughts on this matter Kat. You have good observations, and opinions, on this matter. Although we don’t always see eye to eye, I always enjoy entertaining your thoughts, and logic. I agree with you on most of your feelings regarding this individual, and this situation. I believe you hit it right on the head in regards to what will occur once we leave.
