Lead Judge In Saddam Trial May Quit

Is this the new type of government we are helping establish in Iraq? Politicians who lean on judges to affect the outcome of a trial, is this really occurring in the new democracy in Iraq? According to the lead judge in the Saddam trial, this is exactly what is happening. The central judge in the Saddam trial is advising officials he may resign his position as lead judge because he is receiving what he considers undue pressure from Shiite politicians in Iraq.

Imagine the outcry we would have if Senators, and Governors, began to lean on judges who were actively sitting on trials the Senators and Governors were pressing them on? Is this what our brave men and woman are actually sacrificing for? I expect better than this. What is going on here?

First there were all the stories of ethnic retaliation by Shiites on Sunnis, now there is an official advising there is undue political pressure being applied to him on a case he is currently presiding over, and we are led to believe there is progress being made. If this type of occurrence is being perpetrated in what may be considered the second biggest trial in history, what aren’t we finding out?

I believe that it is time we start to consider the realities of the Iraqi situation and either make a coaching change on the situation, or start to bring our stay in that country to an end. If what we have is a multitude of crooked politicians put in place of one bad politician, what have we really gained? What have the Iraqi’s gained?

This issue is very troubling and I would expect the situation to be justified. However, it is likely we will just be redirected to other issues in Iraq. However, I hope many individuals become aware of this story and ask their local politicians what is really going on over in Iraq.
