Many world leaders are concerned about the program, as well as Irans leader himself. Recently Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made very controversial remarks regarding Israel, its leader, and the countries right to exist. The Iranian president recently remarked that he hopes the worst for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon; he openly stated that he hoped for the death of Israel’s ailing Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon. Ahmadinejad was quoted as stating, “Hopefully, the news that the criminal of Sabra and Chatilla has joined his ancestors is final.”
In recent comments the past two months, Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust a myth he stated, “If Europeans insist the Holocaust did occur they should give some of their own land for a Jewish state, rather than the one in the Middle East.”
The United States has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear power plants as a disguise for their real ambitions, which is considered to be the building of nuclear weapons. However, Iran denies the accusation and has advised that if they are referred to the U.N. they will resume their nuclear research ambitiously.
Recently Iran snubbed the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency by not showing up to a scheduled meeting made to discuss Tehran’s potential plans to move closer to uranium enrichment.
Many say the move was motivated by recent comments from IAEA chief Mohamed El Baradei. The IAEA chief has recently grown upset with actions by the Iranian government in regards to its nuclear program. El Baradei’s stated his opposition to Iran’s plans to resume work that involves equipment used in uranium enrichment.
