Bush And Rumsfeld Give Gift To American Soldiers In Iraq: Troop Reduction

Most speak of Bush and Rumsfeld during the holiday season in the same manner you speak of the Grinch, or Scrooge. However, this year Bush and Rumsfeld are playing the Santa role and many Americans are appreciative of the gifts they bear.

It most likely was not on your Christmas list but it is a gift to be thankful for anyways. It has been reported that President Bush has authorized a reduction in U.S. combat troops in Iraq, and Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld played Santa Claus today to many military families back in America when he advised that the sons and daughters of America will be coming home and replacements may not be nessecary for them back in Iraq.

Secretary Rumsfeld advised today, while speaking to soldiers at Camp Falluja in Iraq, that we will start brining our brave men and women home. Rumsfeld also spoke in Afghanistan where he talked of troop reduction there as well.

In Iraq, Rumsfeld advised the troops of the reduction by stating, “At the recommendation of our military commanders and in consultation with our coalition partners and with the Iraqi government, President Bush has authorized an adjustment in U.S. combat brigades in Iraq from 17 to 15.”

The troop reductions would put our total soldiers stationed in Iraq below 138,000.

Rumsfeld also spoke in Afghanistan and advised that a reduction would occur in that country as well. Referring to the Thursday announcement by the Pentagon that it plans to pull 2,500 U.S. troops from Afghanistan, Rumsfeld stated the soldiers stationed in Afghanistan will be returning home soon. U.S. troop strength in Afghanistan is currently around 19,000. These soldiers are tasked with fighting Taliban insurgents in the country’s southern provinces.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai wants assurances from Washington that the United States will still maintain a strong military presence in the Afghan region. Secretary Donald Rumsfeld advised the government in Afghanistan that a planned reduction of U.S. troops in Afghanistan would not weaken the country’s security.

It may be a small gift but to the families of the men and woman affected, it is the greatest gift in the world.

  1. I find it amazing that you can really think Rumsfeld and Bush are responsible for anything great when it is they who are responsible for the deaths of more than 2,000 of our young men and women, and the serious wounding of more than 10 times that number. Suddenly the fact that they begin to undo something that they never should have done in the first place becomes a “Christmas gift”???

So, I guess Hitler’s withdrawal from Warsaw in 1944 should be seen as a great “gift” to the world??? I guess those slave-owners who finally released their slaves in the American South were giving those slaves a great “gift”???

Maybe it would have been a better gift to not lie to Americans in order to send their young men and women to die in a war that achieved nothing, and has only increased terrorism. Maybe it would have been a good gift to go with the international consensus (and the consensus among the American population before the war) and not invade Iraq? No, instead they lied, manipulated, and later invaded a sovereign nation that had never committed any sort of violence against the United States. The result would be tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis dead, more than 15 thousand American young men and women injured and wounded, and more than 2 thousand soldiers killed. Only to create a much less secure situation in the Middle East.

Yes, what a great gift they have given us, and the world. Indeed we should be grateful.

  2. I agree Don, I wish the troops never went let alone have to stay. However, to the family and loved ones for the troops that get to come home, trust me, this is a gift. I understand your opinion and I appreciate it, in a way I kinda feel the same as you. Thanks for sharing your opinion, I am sure there are many more out there who feel the same as you but they don’t stand up and get counted. Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

    Merry Christmas.
