President Bush Speaks To America And Asks For Iraq Support

President Bush did acknowledge deep divisions on the Iraq war, but he urged Americans not to give in to “defeatism” and “despair” over the conflict. Bush went on to say that, “There is more testing and sacrifice before us.”

Bush also reminded the American public that, “the war has been more difficult than we expected.”

The main message from Bush appeared to be that he feels a premature withdrawal from Iraq could damage U.S. credibility to the rest of the world, he advised that the insurgents are feeling a tightening noose of U.S. and Iraqi forces, “Behind the images of chaos that terrorists create for the cameras, we are making steady gains with a clear objective in view.”

Bush recognized the reservations of many Americans who opposed the initial invasion but he said, “ the United States now faces just two outcomes, victory or defeat…I do not expect you to support everything I do, but tonight I have a request: Do not give in to despair, and do not give up on this fight for freedom.”

Ranking Democrats such as Senator Carl Levin believe that even though Iraq has constructed a constitution, the constitution is greatly flawed because of sectarian influence on the document. Senator Levin believes that if the constitution is not revised it could cause more turmoil amongst Iraqis than there currently is. Many feel the previously elected officials reflected a strong Shia influence and the document they created as a constitution is very controversial to the rest of Iraq. If the constitution is ratified by the new government many in Iraq will once again revolt against the politicians in charge.

How do you feel, how much more are you willing to bear for the sake of a foreign country? Do you really consider this your problem or should we conclude our help and ask them to stand on their own? This is a question many will debate for some time.
