House Labels Withdrawl From Iraq Talk “Un-American And Unproductive”

“You are either with us or against us.” This was a quote President Bush gave when referring to the early war on terror. However, many house Democrats feel they are the ones being terrorized, neutralized, and potentially held hostage, for their position on the Iraq War. Are they un-American by asking for a timetable for troop reduction, or an exit timetable for Iraq?

US State Capitol BuildingThe House discarded calls for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq with a vote Friday that had Democrats stating the Republicans are trying to limit debate on the war. Repeatedly Democratic officials have stated that Republicans are trying to label ‘Bring Home the Boys’ Democrats as un-American citizens putting our brave soldiers in harms way. Is real discussion on the issue detrimental to our servicemen’s safety? Or is this a way to silence Bush policy detractors? If Bush said he was wrong about the pre-war intelligence then I feel he should be questioned on other potential mistakes. I find the link behind supporting the president and questioning the president very disconcerting. Why can’t we be supportive and yet quizzical at the same time? Is there really any problem with asking a few questions?

The Democrats are also stating that the Republicans are using the war as a political maneuver ahead of the 2006 elections. Many feel that the Republicans want to once again rally around the ‘You are safer with us in charge during war times’ mantra in order to once again attain the patriotic vote. The Democrats are said to be countering this with the ‘What is being done for you ate home’ policy. The Democrats want victory in Iraq but they are also going to ratchet up the talk about the losses we are suffering at home because of the length of the war. Many democrats will attack the war posture by stating, we are losing lives in Iraq, we are losing domestic programs because of Iraq, and we are not focusing on a strong domestic economy because of Iraq.

Representative John Murtha referred to the GOP resolution in the House by stating, “ It calls for complete victory, which does not define victory, is open-ended, and therefore means that our troops could be there for ten or fifteen years.”

Do you know what the goal for victory actually is? Most Americans do not, and do not worry you are not alone, most congressman also do not know. Many congressmen feel that the vote to go to war in Iraq has provided the Bush Administration an open ended contract that could go on for years and years. Representative Jim McGovern stated, “What is victory? Nobody has defined what victory is.” He is not alone in this thought, many in congress are unsure of the exact definition of victory.

Do you have an idea of what you consider victory in Iraq? Do others share your views on victory? Maybe you should share them with your elected officials?
