One political flashpoint is over, another may be just beginning. What will the publics reaction be to the execution of Stanley ‘ Tookie ‘ Williams?
It has been reported that the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has denied clemency to Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams. Many felt that the outcry of celebrity could influence the decision regarding the granting of clemency to Stanley Williams. However, insiders say that the governor agonized over the decision but decided to side with the decision the courts have provided.
“The possible irregularities in Williams’ trial have been thoroughly and carefully reviewed by the courts, and there is no reason to disturb the judicial decisions that uphold the jury’s decisions that he is guilty of these four murders and should pay with his life.”
–California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
The issue has been a flashpoint in recent weeks; it has brought out the liberals as well as the conservatives. Both sides are adamant about the death penalty issue and both are scheduled to have representatives in the San Quinton area demonstrating their position.
Many feel that had Stanley ‘ Tookie ’ Williams been executed in a more prompt manner, there would not be as much attention brought to this issue. Many on the other side of the debate feel that Stanley Williams has turned his life around and that he has become a positive force in the world for downtrodden youth who may turn to gang life.
Stanley was convicted for the murders of four individuals in a robbery spree spanning two weeks time in 1979. Stanley Williams was tried for all of the murders he committed during these two weeks, in one case and was convicted on all charges. He was immediately sentenced to death for these crimes.
With the acknowledgement that clemency will be denied the California government will now prepare a plan for readiness in the event civil unrest appears after the execution is carried out.
Sometimes I feel the death penalty is racially biased. However, i don’t in this case.
What will the publics reaction be to the execution of Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams?”
Shame on “Schwarzenegger” and on United States
Nowdays is misundersantdable.
Hey! I see “Cost of the War in Iraq” on the sidebar
You both express the same concerns many Americans feel. It is good to discuss them in an open forum, this allows the freedom of speech and expression on the subject. It seems most people have their mind made up on the death penalty issue but it is good to understand the other sides position. Areil makes a good point also about race, many feel the death penalty is a racist penalty.
If that is the law, then let it be. Would it be less of a converstation if the Arnold was not involved?
I’m sure this would still be news regardless of The Terminator’s involvement.
Stanley Williams was co-counder of the Crips…one of the most notorious gangs in the U.S. I don’t think his execution would have gone unnoticed.
I feel that both sides of the death penalty issue tried to use Arnolds fame as an issue to support their position. There were definitely some very interesting argumetns both for and against the death penalty in this case.
