Brokeback Mountain has many conservatives on the offensive once again. Many conservatives are worried that the gay rights issues soundly defeated in the 2004 election year will once again pop up because of all the attention the Brokeback Mountain movie is receiving. Many conservatives feel that the popularity of the movie will energize the gay rights movement groups to once again seek changes to current legislation involving issues such as same sex marriage, and life mate benefits.
Although most gay rights initiatives were soundly defeated in 2004, the groups supporting these initiatives have not retreated from their battlefields. Conservatives feel that movies such as Brokeback Mountain lead gay rights groups to think that their way of life is becoming more accepted in mainstream America. However, the conservatives want to get the word out that the movie is only popular because of the acting and not the ideals or message behind the story.
This argument will start to heat up as the movie opens in more theatres throughout the week. Because the movie is getting good reviews we can be assured we will hear from the conservatives’ biggest guns. The movie stars two heterosexual male actors, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal, as cowboys who appear heterosexual but eventually find that they have homosexual feelings for each other. The story is sure to create a lot of publicity based on the stories premise alone.
