VIAGRA Has New Uses For Health

What has become of the giant drug Viagra? We hear the name, we see the commercials, we love the NASCAR Viagra #6 car and its driver Mark Martin, but what has become of the drug itself. The name and the aura around Viagra became so big during its introductory years that the hype surrounding the drug outgrew its benefits. So where is Viagra now, and of what benefit is it to your health?

Recently there was much debate throughout the year on whether Medicare should cover the use of Viagra for medical reasons. Advocates for the disabled, such as individuals with diabetes, and prostate cancer survivors, all spoke out about the positive effect of the impotence drug and its encouraging affect on their life. These individuals constantly reminded the government of how Viagra made physically impaired men whole again, many says the drug saved their intimate relationships while also helping reduce their depression.

A recent study that appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine discussed benefits of the use of Viagra. The article was based on a study of 278 patients who were randomly selected to receive Viagra in various doses, as well as an inactive placebo, three times daily for 12 weeks. The measuring stick for the test was the distance walked in six minutes by the test individuals. Dr. Nazzareno Galie, from the University of Bologna in Italy, and colleagues noted that at all levels of the doses tested, Viagra significantly improved the six-minute walking distance when compared with placebo. For the 222 patients who used Viagra for one year, the improvement in distance was 51 meters.
In addition, all of the Viagra doses were associated with a significant drop in lung blood pressure and with an improvement in functional ability. The study was funded by Pfizer, Inc., which markets Viagra. (Source: The New England Journal of Medicine, November 17, 2005)

Another story reported from Reuters advised that treatment with Viagra (sildenafil) was found to improve exercise capacity and functional ability in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a serious disease involving high pressure in the blood vessels that enter the lungs.( Reuters )

One of the most important benefits of Viagra, even for those who have never taken it, is that the stigma associated with impotence, and impotence drugs, has greatly lessened since Viagra was introduced, many feel this is in part because of the advertising features that have contained many recognizable athletes.

With all drugs there are potential side effects and abuses, you should educate yourself thoroughly before taking any drug regularly.
