2006 Elections Are Around The Corner

Many congressmen on both sides of the isle are looking at the 2006 elections and they are beginning to wonder, “Is there is a remote chance that either the U.S. House or Senate could change hands?”

The Republican success in 2004 gave Republicans a strong feeling that the prospect of the party retaining its control of Congress in 2006 was as close to a sure bet as you could make. During President Bush’s second inauguration, the Republican Party routinely spoke confidently of a permanent majority foreseeable way into Americas’ future.

On the outside the Republicans appear very calm, they believe they will maintain their current control after the 2006 elections have been completed, but internally there is much discussion on what needs to be done to assure the majority status stays as it currently is.

Many Republicans have stated that the Democrats are not inevitably on the brink of capturing either the House, or Senate, in 2006. Many Republicans feel that the Democrats are again wagering on the bashing of President Bush as a way to gain votes. The Republican Party advises that many American voters still have no idea what the Democratic Party really stands for other than their dislike for President Bush. But again, many Republican insiders are saying that the GOP mood is not as bubbly as projected either.

Many Democrats on the inside are pointing to the recent legal issues surrounding many of the key players in the Republican Party as a way to demonstrate that a change is needed. The Democrats are also standing on a ‘Bring the Soldiers Home’ platform, which is in stark contrast to the Republican Party line on the Iraq issue.

Thirty-three senators have their terms expire in January 2007. The Republicans hold a 55-44-1 majority in the Senate. Five more Senate seats assure that the GOP would have a filibuster-proof majority on the Senate floor. The Democrats need to secure 51 Senate seats to become the majority party. The Republicans would maintain a majority with 50 because Vice President Dick Cheney could break any tie the Senate occurs.

There will also be Governor Elections in 2006. Voters in 36 states will have to choose a Governor in 2006. The Republicans will attempt to defend 23 seats, while the Democrats will try to hold the 13 Democratic seats that are up for election.
