Right Charges War on Christmas

Whether its legal or ethical to say ‘Merry Christmas’ is not something I want to hear argued in congress, or spoken of in courts, or even mentioned in the local newspapers.

You can have my ‘Merry Christmas’ but in return I want your ‘Italian American’, or African American’, or ‘Hungarian American’ moniker. I also want the name Juan removed from names of acceptable lists in America, if I cannot be a Juan then I don’t feel anyone else should be either; the name offends me because I am not a Juan and I like the name very much. If you are going to remove my individuality then I want yours back in return.

You want my Christmas tree removed from my front lawn? No problem. I want your turban removed from your head. What? You cannot comply, why? Ooh because it’s a sign of your religion. Oh I understand now, or do I?

Another thing, I want the government to either tan my skin or bleach all the rest, I am offended that I am not as colorfully appealing as other individuals I see walking around, I cannot stand for this any longer.

Are you beginning to get my point? Freedom of religion goes right alongside freedom of speech, and freedom of expression. By simply saying Merry Christmas I am merely wishing a blessing of good tidings on my fellow man\woman. How can wishing someone a shot of good luck be such a bad or offensive thing? When a Jewish individual says Mazaltoff, I am not offended; I understand it’s a display of emotion and Thanks. When a Muslim refers to Allah Maak I understand we are talking about the same God and he is blessing me that, “God goes with me.”

So why does Christmas instill such emotions. A discussion I had once with a Muslim friend of mine told me that some Muslims resent Christmas because they see it as a selling point and a way to win over family and friends. To these detractors, irregardless of what religion or creed they are, I must tell them that it is a celebration of our Christian belief and nothing more. Christmas is not a recruiting tool; we are not putting subliminal messages in Rudlophs’ nose or Santa’s beard. Rather than be shortsighted and quick to temper, I would ask individuals of diverse cultures to educate themselves about the holiday and look past the marketing of Christmas.

Religion is a belief, some people believe, others do not. I do not know if there is a God any more than the atheist knows there is not. However, regardless of which of us ends up being right we must coexist and to coexist we must understand and accept each others differences.

  1. I have no problem with the saying ‘Merry Christmas’, it’s nice to hear considering most people don’t say anything to you unless it’s in a negative connotation.
