Many want the government to set more established guidelines and laws for crimes that involve computer, and technology, related issues. These individuals are not just victims of hacking crimes any longer; the so-called hackers are now contacting their congressmen asking congress to become more involved in holding big business responsible for issues related to vulnerability attacks.
Many concerned citizen groups feel that our reliance on modern digital technology requires us to look into our draconian laws regarding technology related crimes and step up the prosecution of technology criminals. Many point to the amount of time and efficiency that is lost by spam, and virus, related issues. Many of the discussions revert back to what are commonly called hacker issues.
However, what many hackers state is that they perform a service to our modern culture by bringing to the front the issue of vulnerabilities and exploitations in programs that were released before they should have been. Many hackers consider themselves to be modern day digital Robin Hoods in the world wide world of electronic communication. Many hackers say that large companies release software, and products, that have known flaws and vulnerabilities; they say that because of the general publics’ lack of knowledge these large companies are never held responsible for the damage they cause by releasing ill prepared products.
The hackers say that their reputations are slandered by large company PR that hopes the name hacker becomes a synonymous with the word criminal and thus they become marginalized. Large companies feel that hackers do nothing more than use their exploitation of their products as a way to attain 15 minutes of fame.
Regardless of where you fall on this discussion you should be well aware that when you utilize your computer as a form of communication you do so accepting the responsibility that you must protect your information by any means you deem necessary. Because the laws for technology are still emerging, and what is criminal or merely whistle blowing is still being decided, you must be vigilant.
Feel free to utilize our Government links to contact your local Congressman, or Senator, to discuss any technology related issue.
